The Payton Home Theater

Hello everyone,

Well, my home theater is still under construction. But I figured I would post my photos. By the way the theater is named after a dog we had who passed away just after we started the construction. (the dog was named after Walter Payton by the way).

So far we still have to do trim work, repaint/texture, and put a door up.

Equipment

Denon AVR-5300 Receiver
Denon 2800 DVD player
Sony HD SAT-100 Directv Receiver
Hughes Tivo Directv Receiver
Sony SACD player
Mits. DVD-A Player
Pioneer Laser Disc Player
Yamaha Laser Disc Player
Sharp Vision 9000 Projector

My System

Hi All

The following photos show my Westlake HR-1’s run by 6 of my 8 AB Amps producing over 4000 watts RMS. The Westlake HR-1’s are a high power phase coherent monitor utilizing a custom built Westlake HRX 4-way active crossover. The HRX has dual power supplies, one for each channel as well as separate PCB’s that are electronically matched to each monitors components. Westlake uses JBL 2235H for the low freq crossing over to a mid low freq Gauss 3184B at 250hz. At 1K the system crosses over to a JBL 2441 on a large wood horn to 4.5K. Above 4.5K the system uses a JBL 2426H on the small wood horn.

These are simply outstanding high power monitors. They have incredible dynamic range and outstanding imaging characteristics. At over 40,000 a pair I dreamed of owning these for many years before I was in a financial position to realize my goal. I plan on upgrading the amps in 2005 to a pair of AB multi channel amplifiers.

Regards

Ken P

So this is my system...except fot the TV everything was purchased with money from good old Uncle Sam for playing in a sand box. The primary purpose for my system is audio in plain jane stereo. HT is more of an after thought for this system. But I have a few questions....

1. Can you guess what the next upgrade will be...this should be easy with the pictures.

2.Does anyone have a suggestion for a better postion for the rear channel speakers....as you can see there is no back wall...thanks.

3. Does any one have suggestion for keeping cables organized? I have everything in trunks behind the system. The audio, video, and power are all isolated, but i don't have a clue what to do with the power cables under the rack once they leave their "trunk"..thanks.

I am getting close to having things the way I want. I need to pick up a fixed screen and more powerful amp/s for the subs but that's about it. I also know when the current projector goes out (or maybe even when the bulb burns out) I will upgrade to something with better resolution and contrast ratio. Oh yeah, and then there's cable managment. OK, I have some stuff left to do, but if I was totally finished with the HT room I don't think I would enjoy it as much. Here's a list of the gear I use in my dedicated home theater room:

Yamaha RX-V2500
InFocus ScreenPlay 4805 Projector
Da-Lite Pull-Down Widescreen 92" Screen
Pioneer DV-C503 Multidisc DVD Player
Pioneer DVL-909 DVD/Laserdisc Player
Carver AV-705x Amplifier (Used for passive subs only)
Harmony 676 Remote
JVC HR-S3911U VCR (Haven't used it in years but its there)

Speakers
  • Front: (2) Klipsch Reference RF-25
  • Presence: (2) Klipsch Reference RB-25
  • Center: Klipsch KT-LCR
  • Surround: (2) Definitive Technology BP2X
  • Surround Back: (2) Definitive Technology BP2X
(Oddly enough I tried the Klipsch Reference RS-35 speakers in the sides and rear in many different positions but the entire soundfield went to crap. The old Def Tech BP2Xs I was going to replace blew them away so I kept them instead.)
  • Subwoofer: (2) SVS 20-39CS+

Line Conditioners
  • Monster HTS-5000
  • Panamax Max 5100

Home Theatre - the endless search

Let me first put it out there that I was one of those die-hards who wouldn't let go of my LP's until I figured CD's were here to stay, and then there was still a transitional phase. I eventually moved into the high-end of analogue, with Talk Electonics in the late 90's. And then I pussy-footed around the DVD concept and only took that 'leap' 2 years ago. Then I looked at AV Receivers and bought an entry level AVR and surround speakers. It took me 2 weeks after that to dive head-long and here's what I have now:

Denon 3805 AVR
Denon 2910 Universal player
B&W 610i (they're from my existing analogue system and serve as my back surrounds)
B&W 602S3 (bi-wired with CableTalk)
B&W LCR60S3 (yes, I am a B&W fan)
Marantz CD63MkII (yes, it's old - I now use an optical connection and it's still a damn fine CD player!)
Sub-woofer - I'm testing a B&W ASW300 but have been told that Quad L is the best on the market for its price (any suggestions)

All my interconnects are AudioQuest (do I hear the forum sigh?). But I've at least decided to replace all my banana plugs and speaker cables with Audio King (yes, I'm taking some of the forum's advice).

And then I still have the

Talk Electronics Hurricane 1 & Tornado 2 amp/pre-amp
entry level JVC and Pro Linear DTS that lasted all of 2 weeks

Yes, I need a garage sale, a mysterious benefactor, and to win the lottery for my dream system.
