Siegfried Linkwitz (of Linkwitz-Riley crossover fame, among other audio engineering accomplishments) has posted a new, moderate-cost DIY speaker of unusual design. It uses commonly available PVC pipe for cabinetry and is omni-directional over much of the frequency range:

The other notable feature is that it is bi-amped with built-in DIY amps and active crossover.

And it looks weird! But being a Linkwitz design you can count on it sounding very good.

What, you don't like the audio-meets-plumbing look? :D

I predict that there will be a lot of activity among DIYers to disguise it. First thing I thought of is something like the Ohm Walsh speakers...some sort of column with a grille "cage" over the drivers.

I have no plans to build them, tho. I'm working (ever so sloooowwwlly) on the Orions.

My first thought on viewing the speaker was that a Russian sub was coming up for a look around. Kind of a "Mab the Parascope" vibe.
