I just bought a Yamaha home theater system and a separate Oppo blu-ray player. Connecting the two components along with my cable box is easy since all i need to connect them all is HDMI cables. The trick is i want to add a VCR to my system also. How would i connect a VCR to a system that includes a AV receiver, blu-ray player and cable box? What cables do i need?

Generally a VCR uses three RCA cables for each direction - left/right audio plus composite video. Some may have S-video. S-video is a little better than composite so use it if the receiver has an input for it. If you are just trying to play VHS tapes, an RCA audio cable plus a video cable (RCA composite or S-video) connected to an input of your receiver should do it.

If you also want to record, that depends on what you are trying to record. You probably won't be able to get audio or video out of any HDMI sources. You can record analog cable by running cable into the VCR.
