How do you choose a Sub-woofer?

I'm wondering which Yamaha sub-woofer to get to go with my RX-V2400. I'm using all Yamaha ES speakers, the 555's or 777's and the 333's.

Is the biggest most powerful sub-woofer I can afford the best for me, or is there more to consider in matching with this system?

In case of subs, bigger is not always better unless you have a huge room and an equally huge taste for bass, sometimes smaller subs in pairs do a much better job or even in singles, audition the sub thoroughly, big bass in needed for HT but not for music so do bring that into consideration.

Like the above, it depends alot on the room.

I built my subwoofer, and it sounds fantasticlly clean and even in the living room (9000CF). I can run it balls to the wall and it's perfect, but when I bring it in my room (1400CF) it will easily gets overwhelming and sound horrible, with peaks and dips int eh volume and either a boxed in or muddy sound, if the volume is too high.

Again, if you can try before you buy, by all means, do so.
