The LSO is nothing like what Handel had in mind for his forces. The Messiah is from the baroque period. This a period of fast dotted rhythms. The forces need to be nimble and light of foot. This repertoire has now, and for good reason, become the province of early music specialists. The LSO is a fine orchestra much better suited to music of the Romantic and modern era, not early music.

We like Robert Shaw, Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and Chorus on Telarc. It is a pretty traditional Messiah in some ways, particularly the ways the solos are assigned, though not with huge forces, but I prefer it that way. It is available cheaply from Amazon.com and has a good set of soloists in addition to an outstanding chorus.
