Creating a surround array similar to what's used in theaters?

Reading white papers from dolby on setting up professional theater systems, dolby recommends that paired speakers are connected to the same channel with no phase, level or timing difference, in other words you simply connect multiple speakers to the same channel and nothing else, no decorrelation, and you calibrated the system from the front most speaker.

My room is long and the seating length is nearly 12' from the front most seat to the rear most seat. With a single pair of surrounds, this requires the surrounds be placed behind the farthest seat, obviously I don't get good coverage this way, and half the seats are far from the surrounds.

Atmos requires direct radiating surrounds, so bipoles aren't an option. I'm thinking of pairing 2 sets of speakers on the surround channels for better coverage using an external amp. Anyone done this?

Don’t see any reason why it wouldn’t work.
