I have a newb question. The AVR chooses the correct/best format for CODEC? Like DTS-HD Master Audio when playing a Blu-Ray disc?

The AVR does not choose. You have to choose it from the movie's setup menu. If you just hit play then you end up with the movie disc's default selection.
