Its funny how this infinity amp is rated at 111W Rms per channel <So much power)
http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/Infi...roductDetail.do

But in the same price range other amps are just about 50W to about 60W per channel( A MTX and Kicker Amp ) :-

In the car audio world there are lots of variables when rating amplifiers.
You seem to have a handle on RMS vs MAX, that's a good start.
Usually they are rated at 4ohms. Some manufacturers rate the Watts with different voltages supplied to the amplifiers.. 12V 13.8V 14V and 17V even. Sometimes they are rated at a certain frequency, and sometimes at a frequency range. Also rated at different distortion levels (THD).
You may find some amps with a crossover built in, and some without.
Some have 2 channels some 4 channels. Some are 'class A/B' some are 'class D'. Of course they are all built with similar components, but some surely have better quality parts and better quality control.

Hope that gave you a bit to think about.
