Can optical out output a 5.1 signat to receiver?

Hi all,

Hoping someone here can help. I don't yet have a receiver with HDMI. So I am having to plug my fire stick into the HDMI input of the TV and get sound to my receiver through the optical output. I have only been able to get two channel into my receiver so far. Is it possible to output 5.1 through an optical out of the TV? I have called Sony support and they said it is possible but they can't tell me how to do it because my TV is no longer supported. I have messed around with audio settings and can't seem to figure it out. Just wondering if someone here has experience with this.

I finally figured it out. You have to set the output to audio system not TV speakers. So it looks like it is either one or the other but you can't have both at the same time.
