Benefits of upgrading my AV Receiver?

Currently running a 5.1 system in my house.
I have an old Sony STR-DG720
with Polk Monitor 50 speakers setup in 5.1 format.

I've been looking at a new receiver that will allow me to play my ipod through it. I've had my eyes on the new Yamaha series. Would it be a benefical upgrade to go with a new receiver like this, vs the model I have (which is kind of old)?

As far as sound, will i be noticing enough difference / handling of the sound to make the price in upgrading beneficial?

If you want more facilities upgrade your receiver. If you want better sound upgrade your speakers.

If you want both, upgrade both.
