Hi everyone.

Please excuse my newbness and I'm here to ask you audio experts your opinions. I want to get a subwoofer in range of $200-$300. So far, I saw recommendations on the two subwoofers that I have mentioned in the title. Which would you recommend in getting in term of best bang for the buck? Your opinions and recommendations are greatly appreciated. Thanks

AV123 x-sub is $199: http://www.av123.com/products_product.php?section=subwoofers&product=12.1

HSU STF-1 $249: http://www.hsuresearch.com/products/stf-1.html

Edit: Sorry I posted this in wrong forum. Mod please move to Subwoofer section. Thanks

They look close on paper.

If anyone has the HSU in the Atlanta area I can bring the X-sub over for a little impromptu test.

If it were me, no question, the STF-1. It's a sure thing with an established tack record of excellent performance.

The STF-1 is a great little sub. Thumbs up here. I wish I still had my old one to keep my VTF-3's company.

These may not be awards, but they work for me.

“Sensational sub...31.5 Hz...106dB....easily surpassed the $500 NHT SW10...as well as the $600 Velodyne CT-120...and was superior to a $500 Axiom EP-175...had no trouble eclipsing the performance of the pint-sized, $995 Sunfire True Sub Super Junior...”
— Howard Ferstler, Sensible Sound (Sept/Oct 2004)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“Hsu's STF-1 is one impressive little subwoofer. It went plenty low for true home theater action, with meaningful volume all the way down to 25 Hz — a lot more than I expected. It wasn't boomy yet had me running for cover during the scene in The Italian Job when the armored truck blows through the pavement.”
— Daniel Kumin, Sound & Vision (Oct 2004)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“The Hsu Research STF-1 is one hell of a $299 subwoofer...the STF-1's robustly deep bass power was impressive, and it was capable of dishing out low-frequency effects like a much larger subwoofer.”
— Steve Guttenberg, CNET (April 2004)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“The STF-1 is a total overachiever. It produced louder, cleaner, deeper bass than something this small and inexpensive has any right to.”
— Jeff Van Dyne, Home Theater Sound (July 2004)

If you look at their specs, they are very similar in performance, so I don't think it matters which one. I'd just get the one that costs less.

My G/F's X-sub should be here tomorrow, so I can give a little write up later in the week.

I got a Def Tech 100TL for $275 (to my door) off eBay. Great deal.

Has anybody done a subjective side by side comparison of these two yet? I am curious how they compare.

I guess maybe I should ask the obvious question.

What speakers do you plan on pairing the sub with?

(BTW- moved the thread)
