HDMI has multi channel audio.
If you mean 5.1 analogue in, it depends if the DAC you are using to feed analogue in is better than the DAC in your amp.

Thanks for the reply. I meant 5.1 analog as I am conteplating repacing my Denon DVD 1600 with a universal Oppo BDP 93. The receiver I am using is the Denon 3805 and I have no desire in changing receivers.

Oh yes, use analogue.
The Oppo is pretty good.
