    Odd position for my 7.1 (aka: is 5.1 better in this case?)

    Adam -- thanks for the pic -- that is really helpful, and good to know that it will actually work :)

    Odd position for my 7.1 (aka: is 5.1 better in this case?)

    Thanks for the clarification AC -- I hadn't considered moving them that far out, but I definitely will. But it makes sense that having them set back in with the TV could cause some odd reflections. I'll look at what it'll take to get them bumped out. Thanks!!

    Help Me Understand My A/V Needs

    I'm going to stick with question 3 since that is the one I have the most experience with -- maybe this can give you another point of view on the matter. The other points are valid, and imo there are cases for all of them (AirPlay, direct via HDMI, and using WiDi or DLNA)... I've used all listed...

    Odd position for my 7.1 (aka: is 5.1 better in this case?)

    Thanks for the input! It is good to have an example of a similar setup that works. I know it isn't *ideal*, but after sleeping on it, I was thinking that since I already have all of the speakers, the cost is minimal (relatively speaking) to run them all to the back of the room (like you said)...

    Odd position for my 7.1 (aka: is 5.1 better in this case?)

    When we first got started, that is actually the way I wanted to orient the theater. Unfortunately, this rendering is my own, and is not 100% to scale (it was my draft that we gave to the contractor, who made a much more accurate one from this) -- so while it looks like there is space for a 90...

    Odd position for my 7.1 (aka: is 5.1 better in this case?)

    HAHA -- no insult taken. He's a great contractor, but truly isn't an audio guy. Thanks for your reply. An in-ceiling mount is not an option for the left-side speaker because he says we don't have the space in the joists to fit it in entirely, so it will be sticking down into the room (which I...

    Here is a version with the side speakers on the back wall... 2013-05-13_15-55-25.png - side speakers on the back wall

    Odd position for my 7.1 (aka: is 5.1 better in this case?)

    I was working out some speaker placement issues with my contractor (we are finishing our basement) and here is the plan I originally had in mind: 2013-05-13_15-55-25.png - original planned position The issue is the two sides. The one on the bottom of the picture does not have a wall to mount...

    I have one shot at this: Speaker Wires are going in the wall!

    The shape of my basement is such that it only has one possible orientation for the theater, and with the exception of one of the 7 speakers (which I'm still trying to figure out...), it has a drop-dead obvious layout. So I'm not terribly concerned about the placement of the wire runs to the...

    I have one shot at this: Speaker Wires are going in the wall!

    Ok, fair enough. Assuming I run this through conduit (which I believe our contractor was planning on anyhow), but I just don't want to buy the wrong cable that I'll have to replace shortly after the setup is done. What would you say about the question at hand: should I be considering shielding...

    I have one shot at this: Speaker Wires are going in the wall!

    We are in the process of finishing the basement and we are about 2 weeks from burying the surround sound cables in the wall. I was getting ready to order 100' of "14AWG CL2 Rated 2-Conductor Loud Speaker Cable" from Monoprice, and then happened to think... these aren't coming out easily if I get...

    Sound system <= $500

    Nice looking setup!!!! How much time was there between the original $500 setup and what you have now?

    Sound system <= $500

    I was told that this 5.1 setup I have would be crap, but I, nor anyone I know, have been able to hear anything bad about this setup. If you prefer a 2.1 then by all means, that’s what you should get... I'm just sayin' that it is all relative, so I wouldn't be scared off of the 5.1 if that's...

    Sound system <= $500

    I just want to chime in as a brand new home theater audio enthusiast -- I was going to go the htib route until I got here, and I have to say that I am *SERIOUSLY* glad that I took their advice. I paid essentially the same (~$400) for a comparable htiab setup, and got an amazingly better setup...

    how did I do?

    I don't think banana plugs are essential, but when I got my 14 gauge wire they made the setup easier and 'cleaner'. If you have a MicroCenter (microcenter.com) in your area, I picked up the banana plugs for $0.97 a piece -- they look and work just like the ones on monoprice. I'm really glad...

    any advice for blu ray player purchase?

    I'm looking for a BD player so I checked out this thread. I just had to say... this video came to mind: Who's on first? - YouTube I'm probably going to go for a PS3 though... :D

    $600 budget, need a system with receiver, 2 speakers, sub

    You may want to check BestBuy for open box + clearance right now for a deal on a receiver. Lots are in the ~$200 range, and are really great AVRs. Denon1612, 1712, 1912, and Yamaha RX-V671 - I've seen them all in the $160 - $250 range. I don't really ever go to BB, but that deal is hard to pass up.

    HTPC/Streaming Media Box

    Thanks for the heads-up. I am aware of the disk playback limitations -- haven't done much checking into it yet though. I have briefly reviewed MakeMKV but I'm not sure if that will be worth the hassle/cost. I certainly don't mind (And probably even prefer) to just rip them to file... it...

    HTPC/Streaming Media Box

    Well, so far XBMCbuntu is pretty great! Installation was dead simple... I ran into a couple of video card issues, which I had anticipated since every Linux install I've done with this card has had the same issue. I was able to manually install the proper driver and presto-changeo, perfect video...
