Superbowl to be Streamed Online for FREE

Finally. Each year we throw our annual Super Bowl Party and it's typically a big hit. The thing is, though, we've never been able to get TVs into those little nooks and crannies... like bathrooms and closets because you could never really stream the game online, save for placeshifting it with Sling via Dishonline.com. OK, that's not really a compelling reason to want it streamed online, but it's still cool that after all these years the NFL is finally going to broadcast the big game on the Internet. That's right, 2012 marks the very first time you, or anyone for that matter, can pull up the NFL website and catch the game anywhere you have access to the Internet. And the NFL is even going to throw in some post-season games as well (mainly the Wildcard play-offs and the Pro Bowl) - hopefully to test out the system and work out the kinks before the big game.

While I'm sure the technology needed to stream content is improving, all I have to say is:

"Who the heck, other than someone stuck in an airport somewhere, wants to watch the Super Bowl in low to medium resolution on a tiny screen when you might have an incredible home theater rig to watch the live, HD broadcast on?"

Yeah, I get it, that experiments like these push the technology forward enabling greater and greater access to higher and higher resolution content... eventually.

But for now, I can't abide streamed video content. Over my 20 Mbps connection, streamed content can't come close to matching even DVD content.

I just don't understand spending a serious chunk of change on a system (and, granted, my system is, at best, mid-fi, but, still, for a guy of my means, it's a serious investment) and then feeding it a crappy signal. It's kinda like getting all dressed up for a big dinner date with your significant other and going to Burger King or some other fast food restaurant.

And just think about it. 40+ years ago if you had access to any TV you could just throw some rabbit ears up and have access to the SuperBowl!

How about 3 channels of the Superbowl with different views and different cameras available? How about an Internet stream which allows viewing any camera in operation at any time on the fly? That would be pretty cool.

Aren't we like a decade plus into streaming? Really, it's like saying that wheels have been determined by Ford to work better when they are round. The Superbowl is a huge advertising campaign with a ton of money and is so far behind the times with their Internet content it is almost abusive to those who can't find a TV.

I watch *all* of my TV through Netflix and Hulu. I would love to host the super bowl, but since this is the only thing I would need cable for, it's kind of a waste to sign up for a package just to stream the super bowl. May the NFL (or someone else) release a Roku app before the event!

Have you tried getting over-the-air reception? That's what I use for TV (no cable for me, either), and the HD content is outstanding.

As said above... Rabbit ears still work! If your TV has a built in ATSC tuner then you can receiver HD over the air and watch it on your TV in proper HD. It's what all the cool kids are doing.

Didn't they do something like that with NASCAR and Direct or Dish? They put cameras in cars and you could tune to different channels to watch from different race cars?

I love your idea of having channels with different views, especially with split screen capability of most large TVs. Or in bars they could have TVs set to different channels. Like a projector with split screen showing some different views would be cool.

The sad thing is porno is so far ahead of the NFL hahaha. They already got all that **** haha. Here in Florida (and I'm sure other states) they run wareshouses with boothes with girls in them and do multiview streaming. Actually a really good business.
