Traditional methods of storing data on optical media are bounded by certain physical limitations that current generation technologies are now pushing. Photonics, which involves directly using a stream of photons rather than light as a transmission medium, may be a way to push those physical limits out further.

This is very interesting, but I think the problems with optical storage will become greater with such a system. Just think about how much more data will be blocked by a speck of dust, or a scratch in the surface of the disc. I think it might be better to come up with some other way of storing data. Of course, all of the other methods have their shortcomings, too, so it will be a question of which virtues and vices are preferable. Anyway, it is very interesting.
