Ok I have been researching for almost 3 months and finally have a set budget for speakers and created several different packages/options. Many of you have helped me get to where I am but I am to the point where I feel I know what to look for and what I want but I just can't narrow it down so I need some help...again. Please give me your honest opinions and, as always, any feed back is appreciated...

***Preface***
This will be in an apartment. Used for 60% HT/TV/Gaming & 40% Music. My A/V Receiver will be an Onkyo 605.

The Room will look like...

Very tight on the budget. Great reviews... from Polkies. Appear to be a top of the line speaker for a top of the line price. Can I do better for the money?

So that is where I am at right now. Please give any feed back. Yay or nay on brand/packages. Suggestions. Any help is much appreciated.

shockemags,

Sorry if you've already talked about this in one of your previous posts, but have you had a chance to listen to any of these? If not, I suggest going and listening to speakers. That's the best way to get a feel for what suits you.

If you're looking for an internet purchase, and don't want any risk, I suggest looking into Aperion Audio (I might have suggested them to you before, but I can't remember). They have a 30-day no-risk trial in which they'll pay shipping both ways if you choose to return anything. AV123 does that with their bookshelf speakers, too. Both seem like great brands. One thing going for Aperion...their speakers are in stock (compared to the x-series). You can also take Crutchfield up on their free return shipping offer if you want to check out some Polks or any other brand that they carry.

Never heard the Swans so can't comment on that. They look really nice. People seem to like them, they get a lot or good reviews. If I was purchasing a HT system I might go for this system just because of all I've read. And with the 5.1-BC's on sale it seems like a deal.
I wouldn't worry about not having a sub, you can add it later. I went without a sub for almost a year with my system. And when I finally added it into my system it gave new life, and excitement to it.

Never heard them. They get a lot of recommendations from forum members. I think I would make a trip to CC to audition them myself. Having spent some time with the x-series speakers I would think they would be hard to beat. But like I said I have never heard these Bostons.

Again kick the x-sub. JMO

Can't comment if I would like what I would hear today vs. then after hearing so many other speakers since becoming really interested in this hobby.

Again the above posts are JMO. :D

Tough part is that you cannot with ease demo all this stuff. Sooo, with that being said:

I would look at the AV123. The one thing I would change is the sub.

Parts Express still has their 12" sub on sale for $148 (http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/pshowdetl.cfm?&Partnumber=300-635) SHIPPED. I haven't heard either, but I would put my money on the PE sub blowing the AV123 sub out of the water. It's going to save you ~$80. That $80 is an upgrade in a receiver or a center channel...etc.

Another way to 'maybe' go: Madisound kits.

1st off I don't know if you have heard of madisound or not. They sell DIY kits that will most likely take you an afternoon to put together.

Some highlights are: They use tested, tried and true designs. The drivers are going to be of a higher quality than what you are going to be getting in the others you mentioned.

An example:

The Audax 5.0 (http://www.madisound.com/audaxhometheater.html) will run you $1240 plus some shipping add the PE Sub-120 for $148 and you are still in budget.

*Note: You have to have some command of a soldering iron to put these kits together. So while this kit would be a cinch for me, YMMV.

I too would go with the swans.

I want someone to get them and tell me how they sound incase I want to put some in the bedroom plus I think Swan is a cool name...

Seriously; if you havent listened to any of these get the ones that are the easiest to return...AV123 would be my pick.

I can only comment on the Boston's as I have the VR 2's. I love mine. The only thing I would say is don't bother going with the VR 3's for the fronts. I believe the only difference between the 2's and the 3's is that the 3's play a little deeper. But in a home theater, you probably won't be crossing your system over below 60hz or so, so what's the point?

The Swans are definitely a beautiful looking speaker. If you go with those, be sure to let us know how it works out. I'm dying to know how they sound.

I agree with everyone else here about this! :D I'd like to hear someone's impression of those. They sure are nice looking.

From what I've read, I don't think that you could go wrong with the X-series speakers, either (assuming that you can actually get your hands on some). The Polks get good reviews, too - I'm just not a fan of Polks.

Thanks to Mazer for pointing me to this thread.

I like the package with 450's in the back and front. I was thinking about buying those speaker stands for rear bookshelf speakers, then figured might as well get tower speakers instead as an easy solution.

Seems like I missed out on this GC deal...what was it? I don't see it anywhere on these links, maybe they already took it down since its the end of the day?

I wonder if they can do a great deal for this package like they're doing for the other 450 package.

So, assuming I go with the AV123 Rocket RS450's in back and front, will standard 12-guage speaker cable, maybe with some screw-on banana clips, be good enough for them, or do I need something else?

Guess I'll have to find a good sub for those, too. Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Thanks everyone. I am really wanting those Swans. I think I might go with the 5.1s and C3 up front and just the 2.1s on stands. I just need to find some inexpensive, very sturdy stands for carpet... Any suggestions?

I answered at AVS.

No response from them yet; I believe they're closed on weekends. I'll post what I find out on Monday!

Fry, Keep us updated.

Mazer, Thanks. Got it... Another questions for everyone...

I am going with the Swans ... 5.1 and C3 up front... For the rears, Would the 4.1s or 2.1, R3, or R2 on stands be better for movies/gaming? I will prob just use 2.1 or 2.0 for music. Thanks.

4.1, 2.1, R3, R2 (http://www.theaudioinsider.com/products_new.php?cPath=21_30)

The Polk RTi(RTxxxi) series has always been the baseline Polk for me personally. The LSi series is demanding for some setups due to impedence but are night and day from the RTi.

I've met Mark(AV123) and he's a real audio nut. It was hard to get a demo in the Venetian due to all the people in there :)

Swan is another neat speaker and I'm sure you'll have fun with them.

That's the one. But it looks like the specials/sales page offers $120 more off some of those package prices.

Rocket HT Package # 3

Featuring: RS450 Front, RSC200 Center, RSS300 Rear

$1797 on the package price, $1677 with free shipping on the sales page.

So, sent them an email asking if they can do $120 off and free shipping on the 450/450 front/rear package.

What was the gift card deal?

This is a sweet deal! If I had the money right now that's what I'd do!

Sweet deal, indeed.

Spoke with a very nice man named Jeff and purchased the following:

RS450 x4
RSC200
MFW-15

Package price of 2551, includes free shipping for the speakers, paid freight for the sub.

With the 10% GC deal (ended yesterday, but he gave it anyway, gotta love it), final price of 2320.

Can't complain about that. I think I'm more excited about the sub coming than the speakers. :)

And yes, he knew who Mazer is.

If this was me. I would narrow my choices down to the Swan's, AV123's, and the Polk RTi's. Whatever you do, don't go for the X-sub. Wait if you have to, and spend for a better sub. :D

Again the above posts are JMO. :D

x2 I would lean towards the Swans, its a hard call without listening

Everyone know Mazer. He is a icon in this industry. A legend in his own mind. :D I hope to meet him myself one day.

So after missing UPS twice, I decided to pick up the speakers at the distribution facility. Imagine my surprise when I saw 4 huge boxes, one medium sized box (center speaker) and compared it to the size of my 2-door accord hatchback. I spent about 45 minutes in the parking lot, removing the speakers from each box and somehow getting them all in the car and backseat. That's probably the most impressive thing about the pickup/installation experience.

After lugging them all up a flight of stairs (the white cloth sack they come in makes them very slippery to carry, believe me), I finally unraveled them. First take: they're beautfiul! And they smell good too! Bigger than I had expected; the center channel is huge! I had to reinforce the shelf above my tv to support the 45 pound beast of a speaker.

First impression on listening: amazingly crystal clear sound that you really appreciate all the more with acoustic music. The speakers are amazing, and put any bose acoustimass system to shame. Doing the Yamaha YPAO auto setup, the first thing that stood out was that the receiver set the crossover frequency to 40 hz. That's when you know you have good speakers and a cruddy sub! By comparison, it had set the crossover frequency to 110 Hz with my bose speakers.

Question: The YPAO detects my center channel wiring as reversed, but I double checked, and its wired correctly; what's that all about?

I can't wait to get the new MFW sub. That'll blow my mind, I expect.

Other things I learned: 12-guage wiring behaves really well, just bend it and it stays in place.

Next Question: My digital cable audio cuts out for about a half-second every 1-2 minutes, for no appreciable reason. Another box does the same. Is this possibly a problem with my optical (toslink? I think) cable? I haven't tried switching cables because of the hassle involved.

Last impression: Having the same speaker for fronts and rears really smooths things out, and leaves me breathless. I think 7-channel audio sounds better than 2 sometimes. :) And the HT is...you got it, amazing.

That's it for now. Thanks to everyone for the recommendation, I'm thoroughly pleased. Sorry, no time for pictures at the moment.
