Zone 2 Tone Control? Big/Small speakers? Yamaha RX-V663

Hello all.

I've got a second set of speakers set up in the dining room, hooked up to Zone 2. Everything's working fine except that the bass seems to be very weak. The speakers are some old-skool Cerwin Vegas with 8" woofers from my first system in high school (1989). They're pretty good speakers that can produce some pretty good bass, but it's just not there in this setup. I've done some searching, and the first thing I'm going to do this weekend is check the polarity, but assuming I'm not totaly retarded, and have that okay, is there a tone control for the Zone 2 speakers? How about lebeling them as big/small in the Setup? I looked in the manual but couldn't find the answer to either of these questions.

Thanks in advance,
Don

Hi Don and welcome to the forum.

I'll check and see about the tone controls but I have one question while I go look.

What source were you using when you were getting the weak bass?

The reason I ask is if it was from say a DVD player and you were using the L/R from the multicannel out and the DVD player was set to do the bass management then you maybe only sending the signal above your crossover point.

Edit: There are not Tone controls for Zone 2, only mute and volume.

Thanks for the welcome, adk.

I can specifically say that using the tuner as input has weak bass - I'm not sure about any others.

You know... that's why I was asking about the small/big designation - my first thought was that the lows were not being sent to the zone 2 speakers. I took the grill off of one of them, and the woofer wasn't moving much. I don't know for sure, but I suspect that if they were out of phase, I'd still see the cone moving, but just not be hearing it.

Anyone know whether being out of phase actually prohibits the cone from moving, or if it's just an audible cancellation?

Looked at the manual, and I don't see any way to set the zone2/presence speakers to big/small - any ideas?

Thanks!

There is not setting for Small/Big for the zone speakers. Being out of phase could cause weak bass so that may be the problem. Did you try the speakers on the main outputs to see if they sound different through those channels? Did the speakers sit unused for a long time? It is possible there is an internal issue with the crossover.

I'll pop them on the front channel in the main room when I check the polarity. The speakers were used consistently until 1997, then from 1998 to 2004, and sporadically since then.

Thanks for the help!
