Is it likely a person will actually hear a "better sound" from the new Yamaha Z9 over a V1 or Z1, or are the improvement and price increases largely going to be features and capabilities?

I have the Z1 and can tell you that its amp section is really good with huge transformer and caps and the sound is really good, I have a seperate MX-1 power amp to compare it to and the AZ1 only looses in dynamics because of its power rating. Sonicaly the DSP-AZ1 is around 65% of the MX-1 which is a lot considering the MX-1 is a 65lb monster amp with twin 700VA transformers and 10MOSFET per channel.

I am in the process of getting the Z-9 in two weeks and can only assume that Yamaha has improved the amp section from what I read. Will keep you guys posted when I get the Z9.

Yamahaluver, where did you get the Z9 and how much did you pay (if you feel like sharing).

Too bad you're on the other side of the planet, I'd ask how much you want for the Z1.

Glad to share it with you. Unfortunately, I live in a country whose system of duty is archaic to say the least the Z-9 is costing me $4900 in Germany and my country will charge me 110% duty for bringing a luxury item into the country.

It would have been a pleasure to sell the Z-1 to you as you are a true audio person, instead with my ill luck I am selling it to a behemoth here who insists on using booze AM35 with the AZ-1 and he is not open to any advice, well it is his loss.

At least in your case the AZ-1 would have been in good hands. I dont mind selling to you at all but the shipping costs would kill you.

How are you getting a new Z9? My understanding is it is not yet done with THX certification process.

As for the original question, I think the Z9 will have a significant upgrade in sound over a Z1 for the following reasons:
1) More robust power supply and amp section
2) Better DAC's
3) More flexible bass management
4) Room correction
5) Upgraded DSP's

In addition, its video features should provide value add:
1) Component video up conversion
2) Built in de-interlacer and picture enhancing

Also, a GUI interface is rumored to make usability easier.

I am sure we will find out together when I get a sample to review. Stay tuned....

Gene,

I have placed the order with my brother in Germany, according to him, the Germans along with the Japanese would be the first to get the general model Z-9. The dealer told him that they would be getting the first consignment of Z-9 in two weeks time. Since by brother is a Jazz musician there, he has contacts in the audio world plus the fact that he exclusively uses Yamaha instruments and audio, he has good reach with Yamaha Germany. He has already deposited the full amount and is buying one for himself finaly replacing his ancient RXV-800. The official launch date of the Z-9 in the US is first week of November.

I am keeping my fingers crossed and would keep you all updated on this.
