Hello All,

I have just finished hooking up my Yamaha YSP-2200 to my receiver and television using the setup seen below. I get video for all three components, but no sound for any of them. I have run the initial setup for the YSP-2200 (which was fun!) so can confirm the unit is working.

Any suggestions for what I might be doing wrong? Thanks.

Receiver: Pioneer VSX-520-K
Soundbar: Yamaha YSP-2200
TV: Sony Bravia KDL42-V4100

Components:

XBOX 360 (HDMI) Out --------> Receiver (HDMI) In
Popcorn Hour (HDMI) Out ----> Receiver (HDMI) In
PC (HDMI) Out -----------------> Receiver (HDMI) In

Receiver (HDMI) Out -> Soundbar (HDMI) In-1

Soundbar (HDMI) Out (ARC) -> TV (HDMI) In-1

You're receiver is doing what it was designed to do: stripping the audio off of the HDMI so that it produces the sound instead of the television. In your case though, you don't have a TV hooked up after the receiver you have your sound bar. Take a look through your receivers manual and see if you can find a setting for audio passthrough to HDMI.

your problem is DRM. You need to connect your Soundbar to your receiver.

However you have the wrong sound bar for use with a receiver.

Your peripherals make repeater handshake with your receiver. The receiver makes one handshake with the TV. TVs are an initial handshakes device and are forbidden to output HDMI after connection to a device that makes a repeater handshake.

Your sound bar is for output from a TV not connected to a receiver.

What you need is speakers that connect to your receiver via its speaker terminals, then set your receiver audio HDMI out to off.

You need to connect all your peripherals to the TV and not use the receiver if you want to use that sound bar.

Your sound bar is powered with a 135 watt Class D amp.

That is totally the wrong sound bar to use with your Pioneer receiver.

If you want to use that sound bar you do not need and can not use a receiver.

These are the inputs and outputs of your sound bar.

Input / Output HDMI 3 in / 1 out
Digital Optical 2 in
Digital Coaxial 1 in
Analog Audio 1 in
Composite Video 1 out

So you can connect two ways.

Connect your peripherals to the TV and connect TV to sound bar with the optical or coaxial SPDIF inputs.

Or you can connect the peripherals to the HDMI ins and connect the HDMI out to the TV.

The HDMI inputs of your sound bar, will only work with units that make repeater HDCP code hand shakes. A TV generally does not have repeater architecture.

The HDMI out from your sound bar will not have repeater architecture and is designed to connect to an end non repeater device like a TV.

Unfortunately HDMI and HDCP code issues are not well understood by consumers and sales people and lead to a lot of grief, as is your situation.

Your best bet is probably to plug all devices into the sound bar. Out of curiosity, why do you want the receiver inline with this setup?

If you really do want the receiver inline though it looks like there is a setting for HDMI audio to be passed through (page 34 of the manual), though TLS Guy's statements about repeater architecture may apply to this, I do not know myself.

Wow!

Thank you both for your quick and informative replies

I enabled the THRU option as you suggested Grador from the Audio Parameters menu of my receiver and sound now works like a charm!

The receiver I am using used to be hooked up to a set of 5.1 Sony Surround Sound Speakers.

I purchased the YSP-2200 as I now live in a condo and space is at a premium.

I kept the receiver for a few reasons:

1) I also plan on hooking up my Playstation 3 via HDMI and the Soundbar only has three HDMI inputs total, so I figured Receiver x3 -> Soundbar Input 1, PS3 Input 2, (Future Use) Input 3.

2) The HDMI cables I have are all shorter ones as all my components are stacked vertically, so I did not at least initially want to purchase new cables.

3) I have a pair of Sennheiser RS-180 Wireless Headphones that I connect to the receiver (I don't see a way to connect these to the Soundbar, but I could be wrong about that).

I won't pretend to understand the handshaking issues you describe TLS GUY, but will ask:

If my current setup is working, is it possible to damage the Yamaha YSP-2200 by connecting it to the receiver in the way that I am doing?

Is there a degredation in quality by hooking my components up in this fashion?

Thank you again for all of your advice, I appreciate it!

You will no damage it, and there is no degradation in quality. The way you have it set up right now the receiver is simply acting as a selector switch for HDMI, passing the information on exactly as it receives it and not messing with it at all.
