Dear all,
I thought I'd run a little experiment with my Radioshack SPL meter and see if I could confirm Yamahas YPAO speaker level settings for my DSP-Z9 (any guesses as to where this thread is going

).
The Z9's user manual states that if calibrating the system manually, the volume should be set to 0dB, the SPL meter dial set to 70dB and the various speakers calibrated to 75dB, i.e. +5 on the meters dial. After recording the various levels, these were the results (SPL readings in brackets)
Front left +4 (+1.5)
Front right +5 (+1.5)
Centre +2.5 (0.0)
Surround Left +6 (+3.5)
Surround Right +6 (+3.5)
Sub -5.5 (-7.5)
As you can see, the SPL readings were more or less consistantly 2.5dB less than those of YPAO. But whilst it is nice to at least see a trend in evidence of the different results, I am uncertain as to why the two sets of readings are not the same. So...
1. Any ideas as to why the meter would read less than YPAO?
2. The SPL reading for the sub should be accepted with caution, because the meter was bouncing around all over the place. Is this needle-behaviour normal for a sub?
Cheers folks
