WOWPAO.....what a difference that little mic is. I just got a new Yamaha RX-V663 and hooked everything up and then ran the YPAO auto setup and WOW!!!!!!! It did in about 1 minute which would take me about 1 year to do of fine tuning and adjusting and I don't think I could still get it to sound that good..... THANK GOD for TECHNOLOGY

Indeed, YPAO is super groovy, particularly when you're first starting out. I'm still on my first receiver, had it for about three years, and I still use YPAO when I need a quick do -- like when I've moved furniture or speakers or something, and don't have a lot of time to do the speaker levels myself.

Three years later, I still use it before I do any speaker level calibration. It's a great starting point. Because YPAO doesn't always get everything exactly right. (Although your receiver is newer than mine, so its YPAO may be better.) Mine will occasionally set the centre speaker to large when it should be small, and it always sets the crossover to 120 Hz -- I have to manually change these after YPAO finishes. And I find that for speaker levels, YPAO is either bang on, or within half a decibel of getting it right. So not bad!

Glad you're enjoying your new toy!

cheers,

Speaker setup.

Ypao auto setup is a good start, but you should also manually check the settings. For example, my Yamaha sets all of my bookshelf speakers to LARGE and the sub crossover to 40 Hz but the speaker distance and level results are very accurate. I manually adjust the speaker size to SMALL and crossover to 80 or 60 Hz. I also turn the EQ feature off.

I'm not having great luck with YPAO. The setup runs ok but it tells me that wiring is crossed or out of phase when it's not. Bear in mind, I tripled checked all the +/- connections before running. Also, it's not consistent. For example, the first run it told me the center was out of phase, so I reversed the wires, setup now happy. I run it a second time, now it says LF reversed, which it accepted the first time. Very frustrating.

Out of phase

I read in the manual and it said that for some reason you may get those false phases and it said to ignore them. I was having the same problem....

Is there a way to set it up so I can listen to the radio and still watch SAT?

I found the auto setup for my 661 to be a decent starting point, especially the EQ setting.I did have to change the crossover, the size of my surrounds, and tweaked the levels of the surrounds and sub.
