YPAO Crossover and EQ

I have an RX-V657 but this may apply to other Yamaha receivers from that generation.

YPAO sets the crossover at 160 even though all center and surround speakers are rated to 80Hz or lower. It also sets my L/R mains as Large (which I switch back to Small after auto setup).
I'm trying to dertermine why YPAO sets crossover at 160. How can I tell if it is one of my speakers that is the issue or if it is the microphone (or other reasons)? I have no idea how the receiver determines the optimal crossover. When I manually set it to 80Hz the system sounds good.

YPAO spends less than 1 second on the EQUALIZING step that occurs after the SIZE/DISTANCE step. I just want to check if this is expected as there's no way to review the results. If it is expected than I assume it is just a calculation based on the SIZE/DISTANCE numbers? The only options I see for the EQ is to either use the PEQ, turn EQ OFF or manual setup for the Center channel only.

Generally avrs use an f3 of 40hz to decide to set to "large" or "small" for you despite you wanting to employ the sub :) Marketing....

Room acoustics in combination with your speakers/placement I'd guess is why the xover was set higher....but I've never used YPAO particularly. Maybe pics of your room?

You can't manually change it to 80Hz like most Yamaha AVR's can? Hard to believe. You may wanna whip out the manual (page 64 BTW) or peruse the on-screen display.

I am not sure about YPAO, but with Audyssey if you lower the crossover it leaves a gap in eq, raising a crossover is fine, tho.....

Yes you can manually set the crossover after the auto-setup, and i have done that to set it to 80Hz. What I'm trying to troubleshoot is why YPAO assigns 160 in case its something I should address.

Maybe it's having a bad hair day. :p

Just kidding. Could be a variety of reasons really; aging receiver/YPAO mic, etc.

No AVR is fool-proof, even the latest & greatest, when making PEQ room equalization readings. Most, if not all, of the time I do 4 or 5 sweeps and then manually adjust as needed. I recommend you do the same.

I agree I do 4 or 5 then tweak a little it’s a known fact ypao almost always gets the crossover wrong and size but does get the distance really spot on . It would help to know his speaker setup too and room size too and if subs are used . I’ve had mixed results with the peq but it’s nice to have the flexibility it offers . Iam not sure his model offers all the user benefits of the upper tear RX-A line does I’d have to check his manual out .

The manual is still available on-line in PDF from Yamaha's USA web site, which you can download.

What are the speakers involved specifically?
L/R mains are Energy eXL-25, 42-20Khz, ±3dB
Center is an Energy Take 1.2, 80Hz-20kHz, ±3dB
Sub is Energy S8.2, 27-100Hz, ±3dB
There are 4 in-ceiling Jamo 8.5CS. 50-22,000Hz, ±3dB

FL/FR mains on either side of the TV, Center in the middle under the TV,
2 ceilings above the TV are PL, PR and the other 2 in the back are SL, SR.
Sub is next to the FL speaker.

Distances assigned by YPAO (in meters). These seem correct.
FL 3.4m
FR 3.5m
Center 3.5m
SL 2.3m
SR 2.3m
Sub 3.4m
Pres L 3.1m
Pres R 2.9m
