Your thoughts on THX (yea or ney!)

I posted earlier about three THX Select receivers that I have been looking at and I am now torn over the whole THX thing. I am more concerned with the powered zone 2 that allows me to say watch a movie in one room and listen to the radio in another room, but have the speakers all running off of the same receiver.

Anyway, I would like to know everyone's opinion on looking at certain THX receivers (onkyo 702, pioneer 52tx, yamaha 1500, etc) or looking at other receivers that may meet my needs (onkyo 602, yamaha rx-v757 or 657, others I have not found yet).

I will mainly use the receiver for movies and some music (not much radio, more like iPod, CD's, and DVD-audio). I am not looking for a really high-end receiver because I simply do not have the money right know. I have in the area of $400 to spend and I know it may sound stupid but I would be willing to buy refurbished equipment as long as it has some type of warranty.

If this post wasted your time I am sorry, but I really would like some help if anyone can spare some advice.

Lastly, I have listened to Denon receivers and I know there are people who will swear by them, but I personally like what Yamaha has to offer. I also like the Onkyo brand and Pioneer is very consistent. So I guess what I am trying to say is that I do not like Denon receivers, but I would be willing to listen to any other receivers out there.

the 3 receivers you mentioned are all decent...I recently installed a 702 and it's not a bad receiver at all. Though I would prob. choose the yammy or the pioneer over it. And there are a lot of guys here that buy refurbs. and especially in your price range is prob. the way to go because there's a lot more difference with whay you can get refurbed for $400 or $500 and what you actually buy new for that price. You're not going to get that yammy for $400 new. I'd go the refurb route in that price zone. :)

At your price point, no, THX should not be a factor, IMO. Just look for a good receiver. The 702 refurb is $399 at www.jr.com with free shipping and no tax if you are not in NY.

Thanks for the replies.

I think I have narrowed down my two choices between the Yamaha 757 and the Onkyo 602 (anybody got any opinions on some similar Pioneer models with similar features). I decided against THX at this time and I am gonna get some nicer speakers instead of spending the money on an expensive receiver at this time.
