Can't say Ive seen this in my wanderings of the threads so I thought I'd pose the question....

You’ve been asked to demo your system - what title do you grab, what chapter do you jump to, and give a description of the scene.....

What makes your room thunder with some serious bass?

Have to say I’m partial to the start of U571, and the start of Gothica.

Your recommendations?

U571: Deploying of the depth charges

Star Wars: Episode II opening with Amidala's ship entering Couriscant (spelling); and Jengo-fet deploying sesmic charges through the asteroid field trying to destroy Obi-Wan

The Incredibles: Nearly every action scene in the movie, The rocket lift off scene is great

The Matrix: Near the end when Neo flexes his Muscle in the hallway

I always expect this to sound killer, but every time I watch these scenes I'm not nearly as impressed as I would like. Perhaps I'm not listening to it in the right mode, or loud enough?

I would definately put U-571 and Master & Commander as the top two of all time. In U571, I'm ducking popping rivots and in Master and Commander, I feel clostrophobic because I feel like I'm in the boat. Its too bad, not all movies work the surrounds as subtle as these.

For bass, its the depth charges in U571 and for M&C, its the attack on the boat. Umm another good bass movies is XXX, when US forces level a cocaine manufacturing facility out in the jungle.

Resident Evil, the Appocolypse has some very good surround effects.
The second Harry potter during that stupid game where they ride the brooms.

Telarc DTS Surround Sampler

Saving Private Ryan - beginning, only in DTS.

Gladiator - 6.1 DTS ES Discrete, the beginning with the arrows flying over your head.

The Haunting - 6.1 DTS ES Discrete, the entire movie.

And the best one of all time: Telarc, 5.1 DTS surround sampler. This one will bring tears to your eyes, make your heart pound, and choke you up all at the same time. Turn your sub down on this one!www.telarc.com/dts/title.asp?sku=CD-84402-DTS&mscssid=T1AADH57UMPW8H90THDKG7Q70Q0CAL8C

Sound enveloping me.

I understand when the "bomb" goes off there's an absense of sound that's kind of funky. But every time I watch that scene I'm expecting more base.

Ducker,
I agree, however, I would like to see a spectral plot or graph to see how low it actually goes. I have a feeling it is or goes below 20hz and only best of subwoofers would pick it up. I will have to do some more evaluation on that scene. It is one that always sticks out to me.

X-Men 1 where the jet takes off and blows contrails in the water near the bridge.

Another good one is Thirteen Ghosts with the big spinning wheel. I wouldn't watch that one drunk without a bucket near by. :D

SVS says these: http://www.svsubwoofers.com/faq.htm#moviedemos

These are a few good ones:

The Haunting Dts: scene where Nell and Catherin Zeta are in the room and the ghost is pounding on the door (whole movie has AWESOME sound)

Titan AE: Icecrystal fields

LOTR: ROTK Olliphant falls and the battering ram at the white city

Episode I: The pod race (so I've heard, I don't have it)

I, Robot: I think the chapter is called "An Accident" where the house is destroyed by that robot

Pearl Harbor: pretty good sound durring the battle...

Saving Private Ryan: The battle at the end of the movie and the beach landing

Blade II: is very highly regarded by bass heads (so I hear, I dont have that one either...)

I have told of this site many times now, and i still think it has provided some of the best demo audio i have for my HT. The clips are generally quick, short and blow you away, they are great to play before you pop in a movie:

MultiChannel SR 5.1

Many of the clips are in swedish, so you may want to stay away from them, but the ones to get, the ones i think are awsome and in english are:

The Run
Norway Demo
The Banff Demo
Electronics for beginners
The History of Sound
The car chase (I love this one)

check them out, they're in DTS and you just burn them as an audio CD and play them in your DVD player.
(if you don't mind the swedish talking, the rest of the tracks have some amazing use of surround sound and bass :)
also check out the Prix Europa Opening Concert for some great DTS music)

then for movies, i like to play a bit of:

Finding Nemo: Whale scene is usually good
Master and Commander: already mentioned
Toy Story 2: the opening sequence
LOTR Return of the King: any parts where those elephant thingis are stomping around.
Titan A.E. the opening scene, and the ice field scene,
U571: already mentioned
Star Wars I: the pod race is excellent
Star Wars II: the opening scene
Black Hawk Down: F***ing Irene scene, with the helicopters, great LFE

Also, something else i have, which, especially for bass and LFE, is a must have:

Chesky's Wierd Absurd Wonderful Surround Show
This disc is strange at first, but it is still quite an experience, and has some of the lowest, long lasting LFE i have seen/heard. The Thunder Stom track usually impresses people often as well :)

If you also do a search in the AVS forums and here at Audioholics, you should find may other threads that talk of the same thing . . .:)

cheers
KJ

I've got a PCi 20-39 that doesn't really do anything during the asteroid-field explosions. Shoulda bought the 16-46 I guess

That's whatI thought R&R. The explosions of the astroids from the lasers from Jango Fetts ship make louder explosions then the actual seizmec(sp) charges... hm, I'm going to be watching this again tomorrow night before I see the 3rd... i'm looking forward to that now :)
I might be able to wait to check out the scene. I'll try to find some time tonight to pop it in.

As it is, I think my wife knows all of the pod race scene :)

I am also going to check out that scene again. (My wife is waitressing tonight so I have the house to myself.) I do not know for sure if there is sub 20hz info, but it seems as though there should be.

I think the whole issue is Lucas trying to be tooo realistic. He sends the flash out first (light being faster than sound in the "real" world, but by the time the "sound" catches up, you are further along in the action and other stuff overrides it.

he does the same thing on the new explosions on the updated trilogy. this technique kinda started in Independance Day, but GL has really overdone it.

you end up with a sharp KaThang instead of an honest KaBOOM. it seems to be too much technology. :(
