Just for kicks, I put The Nightfly on the end, as it's also an impeccable effort by Fagen. Just trying to feel out the SD scene here...

I have A Decade of Steely Dan (greatest hits) and that's all a casual fan like myself really needs. The only Steely Dan song I can think of that I know I like but is not on that disc is 'Dirty Work'.

Greatest hits...pfft. You have to listen to the whole album to get the goodness! Snippets do no justice!

As a long time Dan fan, I find it almost impossible to single out just one album as "the best", as they all have some great cuts. I guess Gaucho & Aja would have to get my vote, but this is kind of like picking which of your kids you'd sell to the gypsies.;)

Gaucho on SACD

Well, truth be told Can't Buy a Thrill is my favorite album, but I picked Gaucho because I enjoy listening to it more because of the release on SACD in surround sound. Its a classic Steely Dan album and its in surround sound, so that was my pick. They should release the other classics on SACD (or DVD audio) now starting with Can't Buy a Thrill.

Every Steely Dan / Donald Fagen album is a treasure! Its hard to pick a favorite but Aja is certainly up there.

I haven't heard the SACD version of Gaucho. Does it sound better than the DTS version?

Use To Be

For many years Katy Lied had been my favorite Dan album but for several years now Pretzel Logic has taken the top spot. There is a lot to like in there catalog including Royal Scam, Aja, etc., etc.

Ah yes, I feel the same way as all of you. It depends on what you're feeling like, and thus what sounds best. I think we can all agree that the albums after The Nightfly are just not up to the same level as the original 7 and Nightfly.

I just got Gaucho in DVD-A, and I think I went to heaven for a moment. Really gave my newly dialed-in system a workout.

I have the Gacho DTS CD on order, as well as the Nightfly DVD-A, and Porcupine Tree's In Absentia DTS DVD. I can't wait!

The DVD-A's 'Two Aginst Nature' and 'Everthing Must Go' are sensational and are excellent surround/stereo hi-res recordings. 'Nightfly' is another wonderful sounding DVD-A but with a lesser recording resolution, and my all time favourites are the 'Gaucho' SACD and Fagin's 'Kamikiriad' which is one of the best DVD-A surround mixes around. I think Scheiner and Steely Dan were meant to party. Most cd's of the Dans are great of course, but the hi-res surround versions just take their music a notch or three imho.

jaxvon, did you order the DTS version of Gaucho and not the DVD-A or SACD? If so, why? I've heard the DTS release is a FAR inferior surround mix, I'm thinking it may not even be the same surround mix as the DVD-A and SACD versions. Perhaps Scheiner got a re-do on this one as I love my Gaucho DVD-A. A friend of mine writes for Soundstage! magazine, http://www.soundstage.com/ and had this to say about the DTS version. "The Scheiner 5.1 DTS mix of Steely Dan's "Gaucho" was so bad it used to be an in-joke for reviewers I know; we'd hear some really awful surround remix at a show, lean to the person next to us and whisper "They really Gaucho'd this one". However this same friend had great things to say about Nightfly. BTW, I have both, In Absentia and Deadwing from PT and find both to be a lot of fun from a surround perspective.

Because I made the poll that way, so you don't have to choose a single favorite. Those are probably my top 4, though I love them all really.

I view Kamakiriad as a Dan album, but not quite in the same category as gaucho, aja, etc. It sounds tremendous in surround though. Let's have the whole catalog released in multi-channel. The Royal Scam is often overlooked - a great album.

I have to agree on the Royal Scam. The whole album has a very dark mood to it. It hits closer to home than the other albums.

I bought the decade album in the mid-eighties because it was too expensive to replace all my lp's in cd. We need an all of the above. However I answered Aja in a close call over the Royal Scam. The Two against Nature is really good in DVD-Audio as well.

You forgot...

Becker & Fagan the early years.....

And kamakariad since your including fagan "solo" efforts

but nightfly and stand alone Fagan stuff should be excluded
but in keeping dont forget Beckers 11 tracks of wack...
total turd but should be included with the other solo stuff.

My vote is citizen... (ie ALL of it)!
