I'm trying to make a trigger wire for the projector to turn on the drapes (OK, give me crap about that later). So I get some 18ga stranded wire and a pair of 1/8" connectors, but when I unscrew them to solder in the wire, and I find a central crimping spot, and 2 side posts. Now what do I do. Please don't say "put down the soldering iron and back away from the wire" :D

The central post is most likely a strain reliever. If you have an ohm meter, check continuity to the 1/8" post, tip and body to each of those side posts. I bet they will have zero resistance to one and the other. Solder each lead to them. Just make sure you solder the same wire at the other ends, don't cross it. To be sure, check continuity from tip to tip and body to body.
