I've tried in vain to search on this topic but there is too much information dealing with walls and corners... I'm trying to buy a nice pair of speakers for and keep the wife happy, and it looks like something has got to give. This is going to be for the living room which gets limited TV usage and a decent amount of music, but also a lot of podcasts and radio and things of that nature where sound is not critical.
We have a very nice antique credenza below the TV which is about 10 feet long. Would it be so terrible to place some front ported bookshelf speakers on the edge of this? The objection is that stands would end up making the whole "entertainment center" thing look a bit too wide. I was possibly thinking of some vibrapods or those foam block things to help with vibrations, but wanted to see how badly people will cringe that I'm not using honest to goodness speaker stands.
I guess I just don't understand what the benefit of stands would be as the tweeters just about are ear level and there's nothing in front of or to the sides of the drivers. Will it make a huge difference or a negligible one, and I'd like to understand why. This isn't my main listening room, just something for casual listening and parties etc. but if it's a huge no-no then I can be persuaded. Thanks.
