Yes DVD-A won't play on toshiba sd-4900

I just got Yes's Fragile DVD-A and when i put it in my toshiba sd-4900 it didn't play. The dvd-a light on the front comes on, and the time counter starts going but the initial splash screen doesn't disappear. No buttons respond on the dvd player when the disk is in except power. when i put the disk in my ps2 it comes up with the menu and plays fine, although only with dolby quality. i think it is a problem with the way this particular dvd player tries to read the directory on the disk. is there any way to get it to come up with the proper menu so i can get it to play? also, has anyone else had problems like this?

I suppose this is the only DVD that doesn't play normally on your DVD Player? or are you having this problem with all your DVD movies?

It might be a stupid question, but what's Yes's fragile DVD-A?

Mr.T...............
You must not be a Yes fan? :) Yes' Fragile DVD-A is a HiRes DVD-Audio 5.1 surround disc. Fragile is one of Yes' albums, from the 70's. I think it's one of their better ones. I also have this DVD-A, and it plays fine on my Pioneer 563a.

varkeast........
Sorry, but the only suggestion I have is to maybe try resetting the player to it's factory settings (the way it was when you took it out of the box). It should tell you in the manual how to do this. Usually a matter of holding down a couple of buttons, at same time, for 3-5 secs. You'll have to reset some of the settings you made, such as enabling dts output, etc.... This may not help, but it won't hurt either. Sorry I couldn't be more help. Good luck. I hope you get it going. It's a great DVD-A!

BTW........
If you can't get it to work out, Best Buy and/or Circuit City have been selling the Pioneer 578 universal player for $79 - $99 lately. Can't beat it for the price. Put the Toshiba in the bedroom.......... :)

Mr. T - fragile is a great album like JVC said, and every other disk i have works beautifully in my player. and believe me, i've watched alot of netflix movies on the thing.

JVC - i'll try resetting it, that is a good idea, might just need a little reboot. i kind of want to hold of on getting a new player until i get an HDTV, then go all out. might have to just live with the ps2 for this one disk for a few months  it could be worse i guess

Thanks

JVC, thank you for educating me on Yes's Fragile DVD-A, I had no idea what it was, I guess I am getting old. Varkeast, please let us know how you making out with the resetting and what did you do to reset the unit.

The only way I know to correct these weird type of problems is to unplug the unit from the electrical outlet, wait a minute then plug it back in and try again.

You can't be that old if you haven't heard of Yes. They were one of the first 'progressive rock' bands in the early 70s. Surely you have at least heard 'Roundabout', 'Starship Troopers' or 'I've Seen All Good People'. I think all three of those songs are on Fragile.

You might have heard, and not even realized it was Yes, 'Owner of a Lonely Heart' or 'Changes'. They were actually radio hits, although at least a decade after Fragile (album '90125').

i tried checking all the settings and read the entire manual to find a way to reset but couldnt find anything about it, and it still didnt work. i did find that it at least can tell the number of chapters/songs, but cant change between. i broke down and listened to the album in my playstation 2 and man it was still a great experience. just made me want to hear the high-res mix even more  i'll try unplugging the unit and leaving it for at least 30 mins when i get off work, i tried just a short unplug with no results.

thanks again

Is Toshiba DVD-A compliant?

"every other disk i have works beautifully in my player. and believe me, i've watched alot of netflix movies on the thing."

I might be way off track here, but in case it's something very obvious:

You say that you've watched lots on MOVIES on your Tohiba; are you sure it's capable of playing DVD-A discs?

Not trying to insult your intelligence, but I've seen many people assume that a DVD-A is a regular DVD-Video disc that just happens to not have video (picture) information...

i should have been more specific. the sd-4900 does support dvd-a and i have successfully played several other dvd-a disks, using the high-res 96khz 24bit MLP tracks just fine.

Correct, the playstation doesnt play dvd-a, but most dvd-a disks contain a dolby digital or dts track that allows them to play like a normal dvd in standard dvd players. The playstation can play video dvds, and will output the sound as a dolby digital stream over toslink like it would any movie.

Thanks for clearing that up for me. I was ready to move my PS2 up to my theater room and go out and buy a bunch of DVD-A's :)
