YCrCb/YPrPb vs. RGB

I thought I had things straight... composite, S-video, component. Component is YCrCb or YPrPb. Digital outputs DVI or HDMI did essentially digital versions of YCrCb/YPrPb.

Now I'm confused.

What is RGB? I see that HDMI can output as YCrCb or as RGB. What is the difference? Can all TVs with a HDMI input accept either kind of signal? Is there an advantage of one over the other? Also, is there an analog version of RGB, and if so, is it somehow different, or use different connections than YCrCb?

Joe - RGB is actually a 5 cable setup typically consisting of:
Red
Green
Blue
Horizontal Sync
Vertical Sync

Often more accurately called RGBHV. This is the analog signal that is carried by computers and the extra cables allow for added bandwidth. Or, you can send a higher resolution at a higher frame rate across an RGBHV cable than you can across a component cable.

What does this have to do with HDTV? Well, it really means nothing as component cables carry enough bandwidth to allow HDTV programming to flow down them.

Some devices may offer you the option of outputting RGBHV or Component. Either is acceptable for HDTV, but RGBHV is overkill and is not the 'standard' for HD cabling anymore. The option to output both is a very nice feature if you ever need it though.

Thanks, BMX! I read that there were issues with YCrCb (and HDMI-transmitted YCrCb) on some upscaling DVD players (to do with the formulas for 480i coding/decoding of YCrCb information and HD coding/decoding of that information) which could lead to green depression and other color issues. I then saw that RGB and HDMI-transmitted RGB didn't have that issue, which prompted my query.
