Yamaha yst sw 160 - Nood Question

Hey guys/gals;

My father in law wants to give me his barely used Yamaha yst sw 160. Is this a good sub for a noob? I have a denon avr 688 to power it.

My second question is, how the hell do i hook this thing up??? The sub only has speaker wire connections (to amp and from amp). The avr 688 only has a sub pre-out. Am i missing something here or are these two devices not compatible with eachother???

Thanks!

You can hook up a sub with speaker level connections by connecting the front speaker terminals on the receiver to the sub and from the sub outputs to the front speakers. You'd have to set the front channels to Large in the receiver setup menu.

on a second look, i found that there is a second input that looks like it could take an a/v cable. Would i then need a cable that goes from 1 to 2 ends?

If the sub has left and right line level inputs you could use a Y adapter from the receiver to the sub but usually you don't need to use both inputs on the sub, just one or the other.

Nobody has told me if this is a good amp for a noodie like me? I just need some thump in my bonus room. Nothing fancy. This is a dual 8" with about 100 watts, i think.

Can't say no to free, right?

Me thinks that you've answered your own question, my friend. It's FREE. How could it not be a good amp for you? :D

You should at least give it a chance and try it out!
