Yamaha YHT 585 - question

I recently bought a Yamaha YHT 585 home theater system. The receiver has two HDMI inputs and one HDMI output as well as component inputs/ouputs.

My questions is, can I hook up my XBOX 360 with component cables and still use the HDMI output to my TV? The reason I ask is because the owner's manual states that you must use HDMI inputs if you are using HDMI outputs. Is there anyway around this issue? My XBOX 360 doesn't have the HDMI port and therefore I am stuck using the component cables; however, I want to use HDMI cables for my TV, cable box, etc. If I am reading the owner's manual correctly then my entire setup has to use either HDMI or component and not a mixture of the two types.

You will have to run HDMI and component video cables to your TV. Connect you XBOX to a component input on your receiver.

Thanks for clarifying. Maybe you can help me understand one more thing as well. Does Componenent Cable + Digital Audio Cable = HDMI cable when it comes to video and audio quality? My understanding is that component cable can carry up to 1080p just like HDMI and the digital audit cable is no different than the audio that runs throug HDMI, correct? That being said, is HDMI only preferred because they have bundled sound and video in one cable?

There will be no difference in audio, it is still a digital connection. Component video is an analog link, so there will be an extra conversion. I doubt you will tell the difference. The other issue is up conversion. Usually it is best to let the TV do up conversion, but I understand many sets only up convert from the HDMI digital input. If you are not up converting this is a non issue.

One caveat, the new regs insisted on by the unsatisfactory Hollywood crowd require new equipment that outputs copy righted HD video and audio material to downgrade to 480i at all analog outputs. I suspect, but can't be sure, some of this equipment may have hit the supply chains this Christmas season.

The toslink or coaxial digital audio connection will have the same SQ as HDMI in this scenario. Only with Blu-ray or HD DVD does the HDMI interface really make a difference.

I have a couple of questions about this HTIaB, since Yamaha doesn't have it listend on their site and little to know information is available about it. Does the Yamaha receiver pick up audio over HDMI, or is it just pass-thru? Also, have you tried the USB port? Can you stream music from a USB device?

The receiver does not pick up audio over HDMI. I connected my cable box via HDMI to the input on my receiver and the output HDMI to my TV. I had video but no sound. I ran a separate optical audio cable from my cable box to my receiver and that gave me the sound.

I connected my Ipod via a USB connection on the front of the receiver but I couldn't get the music to come on over the speakers. I had the receiver set to USB input so I don't know what I am doing wrong.

It may not work with an iPod, but perhaps a flash drive or external hard drive would work.

Yht 585 how to setup audio?

if HDMI for this model does not support audio, how do I get my sound then? I tried all possible combination of coax cable between Receiver and TV, but I don't get a single tone out of the system. BestBuy is not helpful either as they refer to Yamaha and I can't find any instruction how to EXACTLY connect.
Can somebody help?
