Looking for some advise from owners of YHT-360 by Yamaha and Sony SSMF550H Floor Speakers. I just bought the whole thing but haven't set it up yet. I have to wait until we move in to the house but after reading some of the reviews on Sony Speakers and Yamaha Speakers from Theater in A Box systems I'm a bit dissapointed in what I bought. I haven't heard it yet and I already want to return the whole thing!

A lot of the reviews and tips from other writters suggest that Sony speakers are over priced and don't sound good at certain frequencies and Yamaha speakers are just horrible. I think the only good thing I bought is the Yamaha Reciever, I didn't find any complaints on those but didn't find anything good on them either. Does anyone have any suggestions or previous experiance with these?

Sony Front Speakers that will replace the front speakers from the YHT-360 I'm going to use the Yamaha front speakers as my surround speakers.

I listen to music all genre, but I'll mostly watch Movies (DVD). I guess I'm looking for some feed back on what you experts think about this setup, I'll go home tonight and try it out but while I'm here at work I wanted to see if anyone had some idea as to what I should expect to hear from this setup.

Also the TV is:

The Sony SS-MF550H speakers sound good for the price but here are some opinions/suggestions.

They have accentuated bass around 45-85 Hz, try to use on carpet not hardwood, if it is still to much for you, use acoustic foam to partially plug the port.

They don't have a very flat frequency response, an equilizer is a must (should be built in to the reciever) an high quality external one would be better.

The highs sound compressed at louder volumes especially if they are underpowered, I used an crappy integrated amp with them for awhile and the highs would give you headaches, they sound much better with a more robust amp.

They don't have good off-axis response, so to get them to image well, you have to angle them in towards you alot. (but this narrows the soundstage, and makes the sweet spot smaller)

Driver excursion can be quite a lot in some of the lower frequencies, to the point that at louder volumes they could bottom out and damage the speakers.

I am only pointing out the negative here, they do have very nice sound compared to price. I still have a pair I use in my workshop.

I don't have experience with any of the other stuff. Sorry.

Thanks for the info, I didn't end up setting it up yet, I figure if I've waited this long I guess I can wait a few more days to move in. I really want to hear these sony speakers though...
What do you mean by "They don't have a very flat frequency response, an equilizer is a must (should be built in to the reciever) an high quality external one would be better."
Flat Frequency response? wouldn't you want it not too?

A flat frequency response means that all notes recorded at the same volume will play back at the same volume.
Not having a flat frequency response causes it to over emphasize certain frequencies. It's not incredibly noticable on these speakers, unless you are really picky about such things.
