Yamaha Warranty & Un-Authorized dealers

Hello everyone,

The Pioneer 1014 I bought had a bad Component Monitor Out port(s) so I took it back to Best Buy. You would not believe the amount of pressure they put on me to exchange it instead of return it, offered me everything short of drugs & sex if I would just take “something home” with me, but that is another story.

I ended up buying a Yamaha RX-V1500 online from an “un-authorized” website for $36 more than what I paid for the Pioneer on sale at Best Buy. The Receiver arrived yesterday and just for fun I decided to try and register it on Yamaha’s website even though I have been informed that I would not have a factory warranty with this product because of where I purchased it. I entered in the correct Serial Number, the online vendor where I purchased, and the dollar amount. When I clicked the button to register I was expecting a rejection based on the Serial Number, but to my surprise I received a welcome message and was brought to a page where I could purchase a 3, 4 or 5 year extended warranty. I even received a confirmation email from Yamaha with account login information to their “owners information section” of their website.

Does this mean anything; did I manage to slip in under the radar? I am wondering if they would reject my receiver if I put in a warranty claim. What about the extended warranty available from Yamaha, is it good for products purchased on “un-authorized” websites? Has anyone else here ever tried to make a warranty claim on an un-authorized receiver?

If you read more at Yamaha's site you will see that registering a product is not proof of warranty. If the unit needs repair, you will need to produce a sales receipt as proof of purchase. Retailers are hard up here lately. I have been picking up my equipment locally. I got my RX-V2500 for $759 back in November from a local dealer with 2-year factory warranty. My advice, find a local dealer and stick with them. If you continue to business with one place it can be mutually beneficial to both parties. If my local sales guy is having a bad month he may call and make me a deal on something. I get a great deal.
