YAMAHA Vs. Sherwood

Hey everyone,

So I have a pair of KEF carina ii speakers and am trying to figure out the best receiver to pair with these. I'm in the middle of YAMAHA R-N301 and Sherwood RX-4508. I'll probably end up adding a sub to these in the future.

Bass management in the receiver isn't a requirement? I'd tend to think the Yamaha is the more reliable unit but does one stand out feature-wise to you?

The only thing that stands out is the Sherwoods lower price, both those receivers have bass management

Neither unit has bass management. Here's the Yamaha's instructions for connecting a sub http://faq.yamaha.com/us/en/article/audio-visual/hifi-components/stereo-receivers/r-n301_u/10891/8458. Searching the Sherwood manual for "subwoofer" yields nothing and there's no sub pre-out (and the presence of such does not necessarily mean there is bass management) on the back panel so same connection method as the Yamaha would need to be employed. This may not matter to you.

You can get some subs with both a low pass filter and a high pass filter, though.

Yamaha has a high reliability rating in the industry, Sherwood not so much.

Not that it matters to me, but simply having a subwoofer output doesn't constitute bass management.

You might want to google the term "bass management" to see what it's all about. It was touched upon in another of your posts here but apparently you didn't pick up on it.

But, I've been able to successfully integrate powered subs into systems with a simple sub out but don't think it is the same as bass management. It just takes a bit of time and patience kjerfutzing with the controls on the powered sub.

you're right, I was referring to the wrong thing as bass management. I was referring to the simple ability to adjust the bass, which is enough management for me. Really I'm just curious about peoples experience with Yamaha and Sherwood, seeing as I have no experience with either, and in checking some other forums haven't really come to a conclusion. I repeatedly see people saying that Yamaha is more reliable, but is that the only thing they are better for. In other words, out of the two receivers I listed being interested in, the Yamaha is roughly $70 more expensive, and I'm wondering if that extra $70 is just for reliability, or if the Yamaha contains some extra feature I just have not realized due to my inexperience

I really like my Sherwood receiver in my signature below. It sounds quite good, and we have a couple of them that have lasted several years. I also have a Yamaha AVR that I like. If I were choosing between the two in the OP, I would get the Sherwood. Peace and goodwill.
