Any feedback on the Yami compared to the likes Axiom EP350 / EP500, Velodyne CHT-T12 / SPL-800II, Focal JMLAB Chorus SW700s (all models I can get / ship to Oz)!

Velodyne always gets good marks but I have heard great things about the JM Lab units.

I have not heard the latter, I'm afraid but sure would like to.

eastwood hi fi (in oz) gave the yamaha YST-SW1500 pretty good reviews.
http://www.eastwoodhifi.com.au/yst-sw1500.htm

audioenz (new zealand) also gave it a pretty good review
http://www.audioenz.co.nz/2003/yamaha-yst-sw1500.shtml

home cinema UK (adam rayner) also gave it 4.5 out of 5 stars
http://www.homecinemachoice.com/cgi-bin/outputpdf.php?file=HCC/200312/092_HC_1203.pdf
[i've only seen him award 4.5 stars to the sunfire signature true eq sub and 5 stars to the velodyne dd-18]

yamahaluvr (of this forum) prefers this type of non-boomy bass

my advice to you is to listen to the unit (in the closest conditions to your room)

personally, I've heard the yammy and cht-r
unfortunately the yammy was energizing the entire mall
the cht-r just the store.

so the result, there was more chest thump from the cht-r
and port noise on the yammy. if you can bring the yammy into a room with almost the same dimensions as your room, that'd be great.

the ep500 is in a different league altogether (major league)

spl 800 II is an old model that won't give you LOUD and LOW levels (the 8" woofer simply cant do much ... there's a new model with a remote)

focal units here in manila are so overpriced that i've started to hate them. they have this unit thats almost the same price as the cht-15r that goes to 30hz low end. (and the guy said "you only need up to 30hz")

how big is your room btw? any openings to other rooms (that cant be sealed when watching movies)?

i have this stupid attitude of trying to prove people wrong or trying to find diamonds in the rough ... im itching to buy the yammy just to do the above.

A pic of the room is at:http://forums.audioholics.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=2496&d=1136672370

and as you can see the dinning room comes off that and there are no doors to close.

I can audition the Velodyne and JMLabs but the Yammie is on e-bay (I'm already taking a bet of the other Axiom speakers so could add one of the subs to my order....) I notice in the specs the Oz Version of the Yammie claims 1500w on the amp section which is tripple the others.

Mike are you saying that the EP500 is a clear class up from the others (all these subs would cost me about the same here in Oz).

to buy the yammy for me would be a gamble.
to buy the ep500 is a good investment. (yes im saying the axiom is way above all the others if they are of the same price)

the 1500 watts might be the PEAK watts.

how many oz dollars are these there?
(the yammy and cht series sub are supposed to be half the price of the ep500)

MACCA350 (also of Oz), got a pretty good deal on his Velodyne Digital Drive sub
[i know how much he got it for, but you should message him yourself if you are interested]

The Yammie is RRP A$1,999, going for A$1,300 new on e-bay. The EP500 is A$1,700, the EP350 A$1,000 (approx. incl ship & taxs etc). The others are all around RRP A$1,500 from local dealers.

the yamaha 1500 is only about A$950 here (from the store)

the ep500 is exactly how much it should be, btw, how are you getting the axiom's? direct from Canada? (what about taxes?)

[I really think you can't go wrong with the ep500]
is that your max budget for the sub? (hehe)

Yeah the Yammie seems comparitivly expensive as it's RRP is only US999 and I've seen posts saying that the street price is about half (so should be well under A$1K).

We have 5% Duty and 10% GST for imports, so to off set some of these costs I am buying 5 items from Axiom (5% discount) and from their factory outlet (10% discount). But I'm still stuck for a heap in shipping on the 5 speakers from Canada (which I figure was about A$650!).

Right now I have two - the one in the middle is a Design Acoustic 10" passive, and the one on the right is a Cadence XSUB12. If room allows, I'll most likely sell these and upgrade to a SVS Plus/2 box within the next year. Well see.

Right, but it does have a crossover and speaker outs on the rear plate. It's a dated design.

Thanks on the RTi's. If I didn't have kids and cats, I'd remove the grills.

how much power are you running though the sub? ohms?
btw, id like my grills off too, dust that settles on the driver's is pretty much the same with or without the grills right?

All of it. ;)

Honestly - that sub takes the speaker wires from the two front channels of your amp/receiver into the back of the sub.

From there, the sub crossover does its work. Next, you plug your two towers (front mains) into the back of the sub. The towers then pick up the higher Hz.

If you are running 2 channel stereo, the sub would get whatever your amp is capable of putting out. Mine is 120 watts x 2 channels, or 240 watts. Since bass takes up a majority of that power, the sub is getting a majority of the wattage. It's running at 8 ohms, and is somewhere near 97dB - so it is extremely efficient.

"Old school bass management"

My dust covers gather more dust than the drivers ever would. I think they are purposely charged with static, just to irritate me.

oh, first time i've heard of a setup like that ... i would have thought you had some monoblock powering that.

:)
