Yamaha RXZ9 Problem - shuts down

I have been the owner of a Yamaha RXZ9 for a little over a year and there has been one huge problem. Intermmitently it will turn itself off or will immediately shut down when trying to power it up for the day. It begins completely randon and gradually gets worse till it won't start up at all. I cannot figure out what it is.

I'm now actually on my second Z9 unit. The 1st one worked for about 6 months then started shutting down after powering it up or intermittently right in the middle of the best line of a movie. Called Tweeter and they brought out a brand new unit (they did the entire install including flush mount ceiling and wall speakers along with a Velodyne sub for the 9.1 setup). The new replacement unit worked great for approx. another 6 months and now it has started doing the same thing as the 1st one did.

It finally got so bad that it was next to impossible to get it to stay powered up when first powering it on - just clicks right back off, sometimes immediately, sometimes within 10 seconds. I finally got a good "boot" and have just left the darn thing on, muting it when the TV is off at night. It's been on constantly for about 3 weeks now by letting the mute button serve as the power on/off button as a work-around.

What's the odds of getting two lemons in a row? I thought that the problem might be in my power conditioner (a BPT 3.5 unit used w/ a Zerosurge unit for the surge protection) so I sent the BPT unit back to mfg. to ensure it was not a problem on my end before contacting Tweeter again since the error code both Z9's have stored in memory is "PS1 Protect Power Supply Problem". The power conditioner company can't find a problem with the BPT so it must be the Z9 unit. And now I've read that there are other's who are having this same issue.

Tweeter has agreed to switch this 2nd faulty unit out for a brand new 3rd unit but how long will it last? Is this a known problem? - any ideas???

Thanks

What a shame

I've read of similar problems. Ask Tweeter to upgrade you to the 5805 and pay the difference. It's not worth the hassle you've been through and the pain you've encountered. I think it's obvious what the third units results will be.

I dont know if the 3rd unit would have the same problems. I have owned an RX-Z9 for over a year and it has performed flawless. no complaints at all.

Try plugging the receiver directly into the wall outlet. Use a dedicated plug for the unit. reroute all others to a separate outlet. Check all speaker cable connections and make sure they are solid and intact.

How is your unit placed? Do you have proper ventilation for the unit?
If these don't fix the problem call yamaha directly to solve the problem rather than the hassle of replacing through the store.

Do you really think Tweeter would do that?

Does the Denon do 9.1 output? Is there anything that does 9.1 and also DVI and/or HDMI switching?

Sorry but this is a case of user malfunction, I have had my Yamaha RX-V1300 on 1700 joules protector for 3 years now, been hit with a lightning strike and its still running beautifully. You are telling us this is your second unit gone bad on a top end model that costs 6-7x what I paid for mine??

Perhaps you have ends of speaker wire touching and blowing out the amp that way, I always use bananna plugs on my equipment to ensure that never happens. The other problem that comes to mind is a heat issue, perhaps the rack is not well ventilated or the shelf above the unit is too close. IIRC you need six inches of headroom above this reciever to properley ventilate it.

My SONY RPTV running on the same line as my Z9 got hit with a surge and the power module had to be replaced, my Z9 survived and so did my three Yamaha subs on the same line.

26 years of buying and selling audio stuff, 22 units of Yamaha audio gear owned including the current Z-9 and also 15 year old CDX-1050, older NS-1000x, 12 year old MX-1000 amp and CX-1000 pre amp, 8 year old CX-1 amp and all of them survive even with the nasty power lines in India.

I don't know what is causing the problem, but I do know that it is not "user malfunction". Both units failed for the exact same reason. If you look around the Internet forums including avsforum you'll see that there are many others having this same issue. One guy said that he was on his 5th Z9 and was going to just keep letting them fail and get the unit replaced until someone at Yamaha finally realizes that there is a problem and decides to fix it.

My system is 100% installed by Tweeter. They installed the rack and the in-wall speakers, ran the speaker wire, etc. during construction of my HT room. There is plently of room in the rack and its well ventilated. Tweeter also used banana plugs. I think Tweeter would have fixed an install problem before installing a second new Z9 if there was anything wrong.

The unit is also well protected from surges and additionally has a very high-end power conditioner for clean power in front of it. All that from a dedicated 20 amp circuit that has nothing else on it except the HT units in the rack.

I think I will take the advice of Buckeyefan 1 and tell Tweeter that I'm tired of messing with this thing and from what I've read there is no reason to believe a 3rd Z9 unit will fair any better. I guess I'll go with the Denon but I'm not sure Tweeter will buy picking up the difference in price. Doesn't hurt to ask I guess.

Hi , Can you email that contact information as well My Z9 seems to have the same problem.I think I narrowed it down to Video input problem.
With no speakers connected and no audio load or video load after two weeks of just power up/down no problem, only audio devices connected ,still no problem Connect DVD Player with Video with no video output ,BAM Shuts down.It seems to be only at first power up.

I had the same problem with mine. I had a service plan and sent it for repair. They could never find anything wrong. I was pulling my hair out over the problem when the thought ocurred to me. "I'll unplug the Z9 to completely powerdown the unit. After 20 mins plugged it back in and the problem cleared for a day or two and returned. I'd repeat the process and everything would work for a day or two. Then I checked out my front speakers (Speakercraft AIM 8.8?). It turned out that my right speaker had a bad or blown component. I returned the speaker to speakercraft and they sent me a new one (It was 2 years old). My problem disappeared. My suggestion is to unplug one speaker at a time and run your amp (Yamaha said it was ok to do this). It's been over a year and problem is gone. Hope this helps.

Unplug your RXz9. Wait 20 minutes and plug back in. One at a time disconnect your speakers (yamaha says this won't hurt your unit). If the Z9 quits while in the process. Unplug and repeat. Your unit will run for ever when you disconnect the blown speaker.

Was there ever a definitive fix for the RX-Z9 shut down problem? Mine always indicates "check speaker wires". I've changed wire, I've checked each speaker by itself and it still shuts down! Frustrated, especially since I just acquired the receiver! The receiver is placed on top of a large TV stand, so it is has open air. Any help would be most appreciated!

I had this problem with my Yamaha RX-Z9 – it would randomly shut off for no rhyme or reason, even sitting on the floor of my office with nothing at all connected to it. An internet search found info on a service bulletin that said the problem could be fixed by tightening the screws on the back panel where the speaker binding posts are. The screws secure the internal circuit board the binding posts are connected to. I did it; the screws barely moved, maybe only 1/8 of a turn or even less, but it took care of the problem.
