Okay so trying to help my buddy out.

He has two components above with xfinity for cable.

Xfinity box goes to yamaha via hdmi and then hdmi arc to tv.

Only the yamaha remote will turn both on..but then only the samsung remote will turn both off.

It is the oddest thing.

Anyone have insight?

ARC doesn't always work....and best way around it is with a universal remote using macros IMO.

With my TiVo Roamio, I put it on hdmi port 3 of the tv because it doesn’t use CEC. The ARC on hdmi 1 goes to a Yamaha 2060 with HDMI 2.0 and behind the Yamaha is a Sony x800 and Apple 4K TV which are HDMI 2.0. So basically the TiVo on hdmi port 3 of the Samsung KS8000 is the default tv input but the CEC will choose the Sony or Apple if I power either on. When I power them off it comes back to TiVo. It took me about 6 mo to sort that all out. LOL. :)

But does it make sense that can only turn on with one of the remotes and only off with the others? How does that play with arc?

No, but the way ARC is implemented haphazardly by different brands via the HDMI CEC control thing, it doesn't surprise me. If properly setup and the remotes still misbehave I'd just move on with a universal remote....the little I used ARC I had issues with the avr/tv combo not doing what I wanted (it would always change my avr input to "tv" when I wanted cbl/sat). I use a Harmony remote now and find that much better (altho a bit of a learning curve is involved).

The Yamaha rxv773 is an older version of HDMI so maybe that is related. Version 1.4 is a little different than 2.0.
