All,

New here as of yesterday. Great forum! Thousands saved, already! Is there any truth to this one remote synching nonsense? For example, how am I going to control the following with one remote: direct tv hd, sony bravia, sony blu ray and the gaunlet throwing new Yamaha receiver?

There are plenty of remotes to do just that. I'm a huge fan of my Harmony 880 remote, not only controls everything I own but also turns all of the right equipment on for different things; ie, watching tv, dvd's, or listening to cd's. I don't think I'll be getting rid of it anytime soon, other upgrades included. The setup software for the remote web interfaces and gets all of the info that your original equipment remotes has(if not more) and then programs the remote with them. Get a new tv just go in change to that one in the software, hook the remote to the computer, it reprograms and away you go.

Look around I know there are other brands out there, just find what you like.

I'm also a huge fan of the Harmony remotes for solving this problem. I bought the Harmony 550 and just use rechargable batteries. It is the best $79 I ever spent.

Unlike a cheap universal remote, it hooks up to my PC via the USB port and management is simple. I only deal with a few buttons: music, TV, games, and DVD.

The more expensive ones may be better at some things but I certainly don't feel like I am missing out on anything.

Edit: In fact, this remote is so good that I know longer care about matching brands to keep things easy. It simply doesn't matter. I will be using a Sharp 52" 94U series LCD, Yamaha 663 Reciever, and the Sony PS3 for blu-ray.

How do you control your ps3 with a IR remote?

I don't. But that has nothing to do with advantages/disadvantages of using the same brand or a Harmony remote, it is simply one of the few limitations of the PS3.

Thanks for the response! Another winner. Sony and others would have you believe that all their products will be controlled with one remote, as long as it's their product. They make it sound as though if you add another companies receiver you wont have the same control. I don't believe the one remote concept except for the hamony.:)
