I Have The Same Doubt. Some People Say That Onkyo Is Better Because It's Sound Is "warm". Some People Say That Yamaha's Sound Is "too Bright". But Some Other People Say That Onkyo's Sound Is "opaque" And Other People Say That Yamaha's Sound Is "very Natural", So I Don´t Know What To Believe. I Heard Them Both And I Think Both Sound Pretty Cool. I Don't Know, I´m Very Confused.

I am surprised that you aren't trying out the Yamaha rx-v2400. I think the 2400 is closer in league with the 801. The price is also around the same. To tell you the truth the 1400 is a great receiver, I own one. But for general comparsion I would do the 2400 to the 801. oh I just thought of something. You should also check out the difference between the 801 and the 701. If I remember right they both are almost the same except that the 801 has the option for you to network cable music from your computer or the net. So you might be able to save yourself some money if you just get the 701 if you don't intend to network cable music to your receiver.

i am almost in the same situation as you.i have the mission valare 61 speakers and am trying to match them up with a h/t reciever. i am currently using the v61's with a cambridge audio azur 640 amp and they sound excellent and very detailed as a 2 channel setup.i am concidering the yamaha 1400 or the denon 2805 recievers and possably using my 640 amp wired into the main preouts so i wont lose my 2 channel quality sound.another reciever i am looking at is the nad t753 but it doesnt have the video up conversion. i had the onkyo 601 last year,it had alot of conveinant features but the sound wasnt all that impressive to me. so right now im stuck on trying to decide which reciever to go with and i find all the salesman around here are pushing the yamaha over the denon and im kinda skeptical if the salesman are pushing the yamaha because of higher profit margins or are they really better.
