Hi i recently upgraded my reciever from rxv1200 to rxv2400 ,with a sony bluray player connected with toslink optical audio cable. I connected the front left, center ,front right pre-out jack from the rxv2400 to the 6ch input jack of rxv1200 and then connected the speakers from it.(bose 301) for speaker a and (bose 201) for speaker b and( bose vcs 10) for center i leave the left and right surround speakers (bose 161) connected to rxv2400 including the 2 yamaha yst sw215 subwoofer using a y cable from the sub pre-out.
I then turn the volume up to 0 of rxv1200 and controlling the settings from the rxv2400, using its remote since the other was broken. I covered the front panel of the rxv1200 with black paper
because the settings changes every time i use tje remote
i set the rxv1200 to 6 ch input w speakers to ''small" and lfe to sub. I set the rxv2400 speakers to "small ,lfe to sub crossover to 60 hz.rome size 20 feet x 9 ft x 9 feet
am i doing the right thing ? Can anybody give me suggestions ?

You should use neither of those as a preamp as you have no poweramp. Pick which receiver you want to use and use it.

Also, why do you want the two sets of front LR?
