hi all, I am having trouble hooking up zone 2 on he Y 2600. I have a 7.1 HT set up, and I want a stereo zone 2 output without using an external amp (I believe it is possible to do this). So, I tried hooking the speakers to the zone 2 out, but unable to get sound. Tried setting zone 2 out to INT on the menu, no luck. CD player is also hooked up with analog cable to the receiver..... any help/insights will be appreciated.
Thanks

Did you correctly configure the Surround Back speakers for use as Powered Zone 2 speakers? You must choose either INT:Surr or INT:pRNS depending upon which jacks you connected the speakers to.

After that, make sure Zone 2 is 'ON' and you shodul be set to route the input source.

Since you're using all the receiver's amps for your 7.1 HT, you need the external amp to run the 2 zones simultaneously. If not simultaneously, then you need to reconfigure your setup each time.

With the exception that you can flip to 5.1 and use the 2-channels when not engaging the back surrounds. It's actually quite flexible using the GUI.

Thanks Clint/AVrat
I connected the speaker outs to the surround spks, set it to INT, but no sound on the ext speaker; on the other hand I do get sound on the 2 speakers surround spks......guess I will just have to play with the GUI to figure it out.
On th eother hand, as AV rat says, I am slowly coming to the conclusion that I need powered spks for zone 2/3 if I am using a 7.1 in the main HT.

Thanks again

Zone 2/3 speakers

You don't need powered speakers, just an outboard amp and regular inceiling or bookshelf speakers.
There are some inexpensive amps from Audiosource and the Bheringer A500 for $1-200 that would work great. If you want to play the same source on 2 or more pairs of speakers than a single amp will be fine. However, if you want to play a different source on Zone 2 and Zone 3, than you will need 2 different stereo amps or a single 4 channel amp.

Bear in mind that many receivers will only pass to the extra zones something that's connected via an analog connection, such as to the L+R chanels of the "CD" input.

Similar Zone 2 problem using EXT

I've also been struggling with RX-V2600 zone 2 problem. However, I think I understand the basics enough to be worried if there is a problem with the AVR. I have 7.1 in my main zone - works fine. I recently installed two speakers outside which I am using for my second zone.

I have these outdoors connected to an old bookshelf stereo system. I have verified that the speakers are connected correctly by playing music sourced directly from the old stereo.

Next I connected the zone 2 pre-outs to the auxiliary input of the old stereo. Using the zone2\3 remote, I turned on zone 2 and set it to Tuner (I figured that should be the easiest test and eliminate any analog vs. digital audio issues). I made sure the old stereo was set to the auxiliary input mode.

Problem is... at this point there is nothing outputting from the zone 2 pre-out to the old stereo.

To troubleshoot, I verified that zone 2 amplifier was set to EXT. It was (I had never changed it from the defaults). I also disconnected the cable I was using from the zone 2 pre-out and connected it to the back of my cable box - to verify the cable and that the auxiliary input was working properly on the old stereo. This worked fine. I also verified the V2600 Tuner works as expected through the main zone - it does.

I am hoping someone can tell me I am doing something wrong and not that I have a bad AVR.

Can the receiver actually do a 7.1 setup AND a Zone2 at the same time?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but most processors allow you to set them up for 7.1 OR 5.1+Zone2, but not both, even when using an external amplifier for Zone2. During setup, most processors will have a setting which assignes the 6th and 7th channels to either the extra surround speakers OR Zone2.

Yamaha Zone 2

Yes, the receiver can run 7.1 channels and Zone 2, however, it only has 7 amp channels. 2 of the channels can be assigned to Surround Back seakers OR powered zone 2.

Wakefield,
There might be a zone 2 volume control that you need to turn up. Here is another test you could. Loop the Yamaha's Zone 2 line out back to an analog input like CD, tape, etc. to see if the zone 2 output is working.

That wouldnt be any good. Although it was my understanding that if an external amp was used you could use the other zones at the same time.

I had this same proplem. I hooked it up to an external B&K amp and could not get the Zones to work. Did all the GUI and everything. If I turned everything all the way up I faintly heard a signal. I then hooked up my old HTR-5280 which has one zone out to test my external Amp and it worked fine. I ended up sending it back defective. I was thinking about trying it again but now I am going to wait for the new Yamaha recievers is September. I quess it was a blessing in disguise.
