Hi just wanted to get some opinions. I currently have a B & K 507 and am thinking of trading up to a Yamaha RX-Z9. Would like to here some pros and or cons or why our why not. I love the sound out of the B & K, but there are some additions features and connections on the Z9 that I really like. THe one feature however that the Z9 has that I really don't care about is the sound fields. Thanks for any and all subjective input!

If you love the sound of the B&K than I would advise to stick with it, especially since you don't dig the Z9 DSP modes. I personally love the Cinema DSP modes for movies and a few for concerts. Its always difficult for me to send their flagships back after I finish reviewing them for that very reason.

Gene,

Thanks for the input. The question which was not really answered was, what is the sound quality of the Yamaha. I guess even more to the fact whats the sound quality of the Yamaha in a pure direct mode vs a 507. the concern would be under high load that I might hear beaking up of the bass, meaning its not tight and defined, or that the highs become strained and tinny, vs smooth an refined.

The features that are really attractive are the video up conversion, and the ilink for dvd-a and sacd. The dual sub-woofer outs and the RF-Demodulator out.

My main concern is the quality of the sound at continous high volume playback. It would be interesting to see what the continious current rating would be on this compared to a B & K.

Gene is right, if you like the sound of the B&k, then just stay with it. I owned and still do a Yamaha DSP-A1. I recently upgraded it to a Denon AVR-5803A. But before I did the upgrade, I listen to the RX-Z9,5803A, and 507. The RX-Z9 sounded bright compared to the other two. Since you don't care about the DSP modes just stay with the B&K. Buy a video processor for the other features you like to have.
