This receiver does not display which audio format it is using such as dolby true hd,master audio, etc. Can I assume that it is using the highest quality option on it's own? There is a sur. decode button on the remote that when used always displays straight. Any info on this is appreciated. Thanks.

Are you sure your player is connected to it via HDMI and is set to bitstream?

It is connected via hdmi. It's a samsung blu-ray player which offers PCM, Bitstream(Re-encode) and Bitstream(Audiophile). The manual suggests using the pcm output when connected to a hdmi receiver and the audiophile when connected to hdmi 1.3 receiver. Model # on blu-ray player is BD-P3600. Thanks again.

The 867 HDMI version is 1.3 so if you select bitstream audiophile you will be all set. The receiver will display whatever you select from the movie's menu, for example, DDTHD if that's what the movie offers and you select it. If you choose PCM you will still get HD sound but your Samsung will be doing the decoding and you would have to press the right button on your Samsung to display the HD audio format on the TV screen.
