I have all of my video sources connecting to my receiver and the receiver video monitor out is the sole source feeding my TV (Sony Wega KV34HS420 - 16:9). I have one component video source (DVR Cable box) and one composite video source(XBox doubling as my DVD player)... My problem is that Widescreen DVDs played in the XBox to do not fill the screen as they did before the receiver was introduced. I am getting black bars on the top and bottom of the picture.

All cable HD/SD programming displays correctly, FullScreen DVDs in the XBox appears as they should and Games in the XBox appear also appear fullscreen.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Well

all my dvd's owned or rented, show different on my display widescreen dvd or not. My display is set to 16:9 and dvd player as well. I may be nuts but I think before you had set up the display in a stretch mode. All WS dvds don't always fill the screen because they still cater to the 4:3 regular tv aspect crowd.:)

It depends on the aspect ratio of the DVD. The 16:9 (1.78:1) ratio will fill the screen, while a ratio with larger numbers ie; 1.85, 2.35, 2.40, will have bars at the top and bottom and should be viewed this way to get the whole picture. Any type of zooming will distort the original picture.

My "problem" was not a problem

I just tested 6 more widescreen DVDs and realized you are both right. I never realized they varied like they do. I thought anamorphic, widescreen and 16:9 were always the same thing.

My set seems to fill to about 1.85:1... 2.35:1, 2.40:1 and movies indicated as "letterbox" or an aspect ratio "to preserve the original theatrical exhibition" have black bars to varying degrees.

Fascinating... thanks for the help.

X-box connection

Consider upgrading your X-box with the adapter cable for a component video connection. You will get progressive scan (480p) DVD output and better SQ on games.
