Hello All,
I'm in the market for a new receiver, but can't decide if I want a more powerful receiver or expand on the external amp scenario. I'm replacing an Onkyo 702 which I like a lot, no HDMI. I have an EMO UPA-2 driving the mains and the 702 handling the center and surrounds. I have three identical Ascends 340SE's for the front stage, and three Primus 162's for side surrounds and one back rear channel (hopefully I will be replacing the 162's with Ascends 170's so I can have an all Ascends setup) I was considering the XPA 3 for front stage and using the UPA-2 for side surrounds and receiver for rear channel. I am open for suggestion, I think with my speaker setup I could sell the UPA-2 and just go with a more powerful receiver, what do you think? I was thinking an Onkyo receiver 807 or 808 or even the 3007, there are some good deals to be had on last years models, I don't care about 3D. If I go with the outboard amps, I can get the Yamaha RX-V667 for $379 delivered, and use it as the pre-pro, or do you think the 667 can handle the speaker setup on it's own? Thanks guys for listening, I look forward to your replies, the 667 is a one day only sale from Newegg.
Thanks, Jeff

I recently bought an rx-v667 (also from newegg) and I'm very happy with it. It had no problem playing my speakers at a decent volume in my bedroom. I haven't tried YPAO so I can't comment on that part. There certainly wouldn't be any harm in using it as a pre/pro if you felt like buying a new amp or amps (if you were gonna do that, I'd just buy a 3 channel amp for the L/C/R).

Thanks Phillip, $379 is really hard to pass up no matter how I use it. Appreciate the input. Before I responded to your post I just read the quick review of the Onkyo TX-NR709, I may hold out for that, now I'm really confused.

Yeah, the NR709 looks great...I'm sure multieq xt would be nice to have along with all the other features and stuff. If you choose to get the RX-V667 you can always sell it later or use it in another room because I think at a sub $400 price there's nothing else out there that can touch it unless you buy used/refurbed.

I hear you Phill, I think I'm going to get the 667 and use it for awile, I can't pass up the sub $400 price tag, I'll use it till the Onkyo 709 comes down in price and then use the 667 in my wife's computer and workshop room with all the other speakers and CD players I have, this will soften her up for some new upgrades. Thanks my friend.
