Yamaha RX-V665 always defaults to Blu-ray

Whenever I turn on the receiver, it always defaults to the Blu-ray player "scene." Even if I change it from HDMI 1 to another input, it goes to that input when I turn the receiver on.

I have enabled the ability for the Receiver to communicate with other HDMI devices, but the Blu-ray player is never on, and never turns itself on when it defaults to the Blu-ray "scene." The receiver simply turns on, and always goes to the BD player's scene, whatever it is.

I searched the forum and couldn't find anything. I posted this question on the AVSforum and no one had an answer.

I'm asking because I most often watch Cable, and want the Receiver to either: 1) Remember the last scene I chose or 2) Default to HDMI 1 so that I can set my STB to HDMI 1 and not have to change it every time I power on the receiver.

I know I can turn CEC off and it won't default there, but then I lose CEC functionality. Any help?

Thanks a ton for the time!

You should read the manual for your receiver, and for your BD player.

There is a good chance that the BD player that you have always outputs the 5 volt power via HDMI (see this), even when off, in which case that is probably why your receiver switches to it. And if your BD player does that, you have 3 choices:

  1. turn off your HDMI communication between the devices,
  2. buy a new BD player that does not output this 5v power all the time (which may be hard to find out before trying it), or
  3. just learn to live with the fact that the receiver is going to switch to BD every time you turn it on.

Such devices that always output 5v, even when off, can cause problems for automatic HDMI switch boxes, as they typically use that 5v as a sensor to determine whether the source is turned on or not.

I personally would do either 1 or 3, assuming that I have correctly diagnosed your issue.

Edited to add:

A simple test of this would be, switch the receiver to something other than the BD, and then when everything is off, unplug the hdmi cable from the BD player. If then the receiver does not switch to the BD input when you turn it on, I have probably diagnosed your issue correctly. If it still switches to the BD input, you need to read the manual for the receiver and see if there is some setting wrong or you may have a defective receiver (but more likely, some setting wrong).

Thanks so much for the help....

I did exactly as you said (set Receiver to STB setting, turned everything off, unplugged BD player, turned it all back on). When I turned it on, it went to the BD player setting. So it must not be the 5 volt issue you mentioned.

The only thing I've been able to do to "fix" it is to turn the CEC off at my Bravia TV. Unless someone has specific suggestions based on my receiver, I guess I'll just have to choose 1 or 3 like you said.

Any other suggestions would be great. Thanks again.

In that case, you probably want to look at the manual for the TV, as it is odd that it would tell the receiver to switch to the BD player when the BD player is unplugged.

Do you have any indication if you saved that as a default setting in its memory?

Honestly, I have no idea how I would have saved it in the receiver's memory, or the TV. I guess its possible. Have an idea of how I can check?

possible solution

If there is an input setting called "auto" use it and it should sense what signal it is actually receiving and switch to the appropriate place

OK....so I think I at least figured out what is causing the problem.

My Sony Bravia KDL-46HX701 is defaulting to the "CTRL:HDMI BD Player" setting when it turns on. It says "Player 1" instead of defaulting to the HDMI input that I have plugged the cable into from the receiver. It does this whether the BD player is on or off. Weird.

All settings concerning inputs are set to "auto."

I've got no idea how to change this.

That is why I said that you need to read the manual for your TV. If, after reading your manual, you cannot figure it out, you may wish to contact Sony and ask them how to deal with this issue.

I obviously know I can read the manual...and have, cover to cover. And I obviously know I can contact the manufacturer. But all of us know how fun that can be.

I just thought I'd throw the question to the "experts" out there who might be able to offer an explanation.

Thanks to those who offered helpful suggestions anyway.

Take care.
