Is it possible to run two different inputs simultaneously on two different sets of speakers? For instance, listening to an ipod (2-channel stereo) in one room while the kids play video games (5.1 surround) in another room (where the receiver is located).

I thought I heard this receiver could do this but I sure can't figure out how. I'm assuming it has something to do with the multi-channel input but just don't know where to connect the speakers for 2-channel stereo in the different room.

Thank you for any help.

What you are talking about is different zones.

The 659 has two zones that can be used from the internal amp and will allow you to listen to two different sources at the same time. The 659 is a great little AVR and will do what you are trying to do.

Hey, wapam, welcome to the forum!

I believe that you can indeed do what you want. The instructions for how to use Zone 2 on that receiver begin on page 104 of the owners manual. I'd suggest looking through that section, and let us know if that doesn't give enough information. We'd be happy to walk you through any problems that you have with that.

Opps; it looks like you already have this amp.
Just hook your zone 2 speakers to the "presence" outputs (the ones with the flip binders) go into the menu and assign the internal amp and the presence speakers to zone two. All sources (except radio tuner and IPOD) in zone two require an analog signal so run redundant audio cables ( optical for zone one and analog for zone two)

No problem; I have a 659 and zone 2 is my back patio so if you have any issues just let me know.

Thanks for the help guys. I will try your suggestions.

Yamaha RX-V659 Zone 2 problem

I have an RX-V659 receiver. I was helping a friend to connect a subwoofer to his receiver through the LFE out connection, and then calibrate the surround speakers using a soundmeter.
His receiver was initially using Zone 2 to power some in ceiling speakers in a couple different rooms and to pipe music from iTunes through the receiver to those speakers. He has those connected to Zone 2/Presence. All worked fine.
During the speaker setup and calibration I noticed that the rear speakers didn't show up in the setup as being connected. (He has 3 in front, L/R side, and L/R rear connected) I thought that was strange until I guessed that the L/R rear may not show up with Zone 2 on. It seemed like a good guess because when I turned off Zone 2 and went back into setup, indeed the rear L/R speakers showed up.
I calibrated the system and all was well for surround sound. All speakers and subwoofer worked fine.
Later, my friend went to turn on Zone 2 to listen to his speakers connected in the other room. No sound. No sound from any source.
I went back over to help troubleshoot. I figured that maybe the L/R rear speakers had to be set to none before Zone 2 would work. No go.
No combination of anything in the setup menus seemed to re-enable Zone 2. When pressing the Zone 2 button the led for Zone 2 turned on, but no sound came out of the speakers connected to Zone 2 regardless of the source. We could hear iTunes from the source in the primary zone, but we could get nothing from Zone 2.
I've read the manual, but I'm basically at a complete loss. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Additionally, if we connect the front three channels to pre-amp out and power them using an external amplifier will we still have to toggle Zone 2 off in order to use the L/R rear speakers or will the receiver automatically detect that there is enough power?

I have tried almost every combination in the setup menu and Zone 2 still does not output any audio to the speakers.

Thanks,
-James

Did you run a redundant analog set-up to zone 2?

Zone 2 problem

No, I did not initially install any of the components. However, zone 2 was working before I enable the rear surround speakers. When I turned off the rear speakers zone 2 did not come back on. Is it possbile that a fuse blew or an amp went bad? I can toggle the rear speakers on and off but nothing I change in the menu configuration will reenable sound to come out of zone 2. Thanks for the reply. I am going to call Yamaha support this evening to see if they can offer some insight.

Unless you have analog connections from each source you want to use in zone 2, it was not working before. The only things that will work without this connection is the IPOD and tuner.

Sorry--I misunderstood. Yes, there is an analog connection from the external sound card to the receiver. All connections have been checked. Zone 2 was working for over a year. It stopped working when I enabled the L/R rear surrounds in the setup menu. When we noticed Zone 2 was no longer working my thought was that the internal amp couldn't power both the rear surrounds and Zone 2. I went back into the setup and disabled the L/R rear surround speakers. No sound can be heard from any Zone 2 source. Before all sources could be heard from Zone 2.

I bet it is just some type of assignment issue. Let me check when I get home and see if I can come up with anything. My 659 is between duties right now as I am moving it into the bedroom system.

There are analog connections from each source, the sources being used in Zone 2 were the cable tv RCA out to RCA in on the receiver, the iTunes connection via rca connections, and the tuner. All three of these sources were working before for over a year.

Thanks for your help. That would be great if that is what it is. I didn't change assignments, but that doesn't necessarily mean anything,...

Ok, first confirm that you are using the presence speaker terminals.

Second, make certain that the zone 2 amp is set at "INT".

I disconnected the Zone 2 speakers and hooked one of the front speakers to the Presence/Zone 2 terminals. I was able to hear sound from the speaker. So, it's not the receiver. The speaker wires travel through the wall and conect to three wall-plate volume controls. From there the wires travel to a pair of speakers on the porch, a pair of speakers in the kitchen, and a pair of speakers in the dining room. So, the problem has to be the wiring, the volume control, (or less likely) the 6 ceiling mount speakers attached to the wiring.

I have this amp and would like to be able to listen to an audio source while viewing a bd, don't seem to know how to get there.
