Yamaha RX-v573 2ch Downmixing

I have a 5.1 FLAC test file which I am trying to play through the receiver using the USB port on the front. I have a 2.1 system (left and right front with subwoofer). I see that the 2ch Stereo setting is supposed to downmix multichannel input. However, I only can hear the left and right front channels, none of the other channels.

Is there something else I have to do in order to get the downmixing for this input?

Thank you for any advice.

Welcome to the forum!

From looking through the manual for the 573, it sure seems like you're going it right. "2ch Stereo" is supposed to down mix. I have a Pioneer that does the same thing.

I looked through the small print to see if it said anything about not down mixing FLAC, but I didn't see anything. The only note that I saw that might apply is on page 50 where it discusses playback of USB devices where it says, "Some features may not be compatible, depending on the model or manufacturer of the USB storage device." Do you have a different USB device that you could try?

Anyone else have any ideas?

Thank you for the welcome!

I used a SanDisk drive with nothing on it except for audio files. It seems possible that the 2ch mixdown does not work for flac files. It would not be the first time that the v573 manual was incomplete.

I also tried multichannel wav and wma files which could not be read. The manual does not specify if multichannel files are supported.

Has anyone else tried any of this?
