Yamaha RX-V3900 and 2 Channel Amp

I see similar questions like mine posted but figured I might as well join in :) My faithful Yamaha RX-V3900 has suited me well for a few years but now I am getting into 2 channel music I am wondering if I should be looking at adding an External amp to drive my mains. They are not high end but mid to low level Paradigm Monitor 7's. Like another poster said...90% of the time my setup is fine but when I want some in your face sound (when the kids and wife are gone) I find the 3900 lacks a bit in filling my room in 2 channel mode.
My system consists of:
Yamaha RX-V3900
Paradigm Monitor 7 Fronts
Paradigm Center 3
Paradigm PDR-10 Sub
Paradigm Titan Surrounds

I can get gear at cost with my dealer friend but unfortunately I am in Canada and most Amp's are much higher in cost than the US. As an example of costing I can get a Yamaha A-S801 for $620 Canadian ($450 US)

Thanks for any insight and threads are no fun without pics :)

S-801 is not an amp, it is an integrated and won't improve anything. Pro amps might be your answer as you are going to need to step up a fair amount in power to actually hear a significant difference.

Run those puppies set to small and let the sub handle the lows, maybe crossed at 60, and I bet they'd be fine.

If you want to try an amp just use your avr's pre-outs and get something like a Crown XLS 1502 amp if you think power is the answer but you're only going to gain a few dB over your avr's amps (takes a doubling of power to gain 3dB) but your speakers are possibly a limiting factor, too.

I also wonder if you've got your avr set to use bass management for your mains or not now.

In general a better sub might help as would spreading your mains out further than the width of your tv.

Thanks for the replies. Apologies on suggesting the 801 not sure why I thought that was an amp. Been researching 2 channel systems and got kind of mixed up.
My layout is set the only way I can really do things in the room as it is our main living area. The system is set in a corner and pushing the speakers further apart is not an option really.
My setup has been unchanged since i got the system:
Front Small 80hz
Center Small 80hz
Surround Small 80hz
Bass Out Subwoofer

Maybe everything does come down to my front speakers as they are mid to low level Paradigms and money would be better spent on upgrading those to the 9 series. Budget is a factor for anything I add to the system

If you are not running your mains full range, an external amp will not make much of an audible difference. They are really only good for horribly inefficient speakers or squeezing some extra bass out of quality woofers.

So maybe I should set the front to Large and see if that makes a difference?

It is entirely possible the speakers can't deliver what you're after. Is it that they only don't sound clear at elevated levels? Yes, I would maybe try them full range and see if you hear the same thing. Often a speaker will sound fine at lower levels and when you push them, you will hear their weaknesses and that's different than not enough power. BUT, what exactly doesn't sound right to you? I am a former owner of many Paradigm speakers and I did try out the Studios and liked them well enough, but found other speakers that sounded better to my ears. Power is only part of the picture, great sound starts with the speakers.
