Hello Everyone. Well got my new receiver in Friday and was able to get the basic connections set but could use your help.

What is the correct way to hook up a plasma?
HDMI cable from TV to receiver, then second hdmi from receiver to cable box?

Sounds for TV
Cable box (optical) to receiver?

Onkyo 5 disc cd/dvd player
S Video cable and Video cable from TV to CD player. Then left right audio cable to receiver?

Last question:

YPAO. Was able to get the speakers to output test soudns however I cant get the gui screen to come up after.

Thanks for all your help. Just want to do this right and I am not 100% clear on how to make sure the upconversion works appropriately.

Thanks

3800 has 4 in/1 out HDMI slots.

Traditional/Ideal connection would be connect a HDMI cable from the "Out" of the 3800 to your TV, then you connect another HDMI cable from one of the "In" (I believe it's labeled DTV/CBL) to your cable/satellite box. If that works, you don't need to connect another optical cable from your SAT box to your 3800.

In my case, I have to do it differently because I got a 1-2 second black out delays every time I switch from a SD channel to HD channel. To resolve my problem, I connect one HDMI from my SAT box to TV and one optical cable from my SAT box to my 3800.

Does your Onkyo DVD/CD player has optical out as well? If it does, use it instead of the red/white RCA cable. It will sound a lot better. You should also connect the SVideo cable from your Onkyo to the Yammy 3800 so you can switch between cable and dvd viewing with the receiver.

Vedder your talking backwards so here is my take on it.....

Go from cable box out to Reciever in with HDMI then take the monitor out on reciever to video in on TV if you do this audio and video will be taken care of for cable. For DVD player go Optical out from DVD to Optical In on reciever which will get you all surround for movies, you can also go a step further and go stereo RCA left and right out of DVD player to CD input on reciever to make switching less confusing for family members wanting to play music VS TV or DVD movies.

Video connections

Your Receiver should be able to use the GUI over HDMI but you might have to enable this feature.

For the DVD player, check if it has a component video output (3 red, green, blue RCA connectors) for better quality video than s-video or composite. As sugested you can connect all A/V source to the receiver and use a single HDMI output from the receiver to the display.
